The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, presented this morning to campaignFeille a mate to male violence promoted by the Unit of Violence on Women of the Subdelegation of the Government in Pontevedra in collaboration with the Galician Basketball Federation (Fegaba). This campaign, which will distribute purple balls with the motto of the initiative among the basketball teams of the province that compete in the category of benxamíns, aims to work on the prevention and eradication of male violence through grassroots sport.
In the presentation ceremony, which took place in the sports pavilion of the University of Vigo, located in the CUVI after a day of the women’s and men’s preminibasket league, the subdelegate was accompanied by the head of the Violence Unit on Women of the Subdelegation, María José Rodríguez; the president of the Fegaba, Julio Rodríguez and its vice-president, Susana García; and the vice-president of University Extension of the University of Vigo, Susana Reboreda. Abel Losada insisted on the idea that “sport is a fundamental space to educate in values of equality, respect and solidarity, and must be a reflection of the society we want: free from discrimination, violence and gender prejudice.”
He also explained that the Subdelegation launches this initiative in the field of basic basketball, but the idea is to expand it, year by year, to other sports. “It’s not just about competing, the sport also educates. And we must make sure that it educates in equality, in respect and in the firm rejection of male violence," he said.
Losada stressed the importance of training in equality and the prevention of gender violence being integrated into sports programs, especially in the children's field, since "the girls and boys who today are part of the basic sport are the citizenship of tomorrow and teaching them to reject male violence is to sow a better future" and defended the need to put the focus on sport "so that also, this area, is free of violence and is a safe and equal space for all."
