The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, advanced today the “redoubling of efforts in preventive tasks, which also have a punitive part” in view of the increase that is recorded this year in the victims of road accidents on Galician roads. He pointed this out at the commemoration of the World Day in Memory of Road Traffic Accident Victims, which was held outside the Government Delegation.
Before observing a minute’s silence for the victims and injured people, Pedro Blanco described as “unbearable figures” the data collected by the General Directorate of Traffic in Galicia, which points to 82 people who died in traffic accidents until this Monday. In this respect, he pointed out the responsibility and duty assumed by the Administration with each of these deceased people, with the injured people and with their families, remarking that, from the Government, “we are not going to stop or lower our guard” in the face of this reality.
In his speech, the delegate called for the responsibility and prudence of the population in the use of the roads, indicating that 25 of the deaths this year were due to frontal collisions and that 17% of the deceased drivers did not use the safety belt.
As for the users, he focused on vulnerable users, who represent 47% of the fatalities. Pedro Blanco meant that, within this group, the increase in deceased motorcyclists stands out, which this year adds up to 22 deaths compared to 13 last year.
Pedro Blanco recalled that “security on our roads and streets is one of the pillars that underpins citizen security and I can say that it is one of the tasks that this Government most responsibly affronts”, while highlighting the constant work of the Traffic and Civil Guard personnel on the roads of the Community.
Day in memory of traffic accident victims
