The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, presented today in Vimianzo the programming of the seventh edition of the National Cycle of Cinema and Rural Women, promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, with the celebration of a round table prior to the screening of the feature film ‘Sica’, in which the mayor of Vimianzo, Mónica Rodríguez, and the main actress of the film, María Villaverde, also participated.
At the event, which took place at the Casa de la Cultura, the subdelegate highlighted the contribution of culture to the dynamization of rural territories and the enhancement of the role of women. In this line, he pointed out the importance of recognizing the fundamental role of women in the configuration of life and culture of our rural. “We cannot understand rural areas without the fundamental contribution of their women. In many cases, they are the ones who, through oral tradition, retain an essential part of our language and culture, which is why it is essential to assert and make them visible,” he said.
María Rivas also wanted to highlight that this cycle is a great example of network work, since it is possible thanks to the collaboration with the Filmoteca Espa hola, eight regional film libraries, 131 senior citizens’ residences, 12 institutes and numerous cultural associations and collectives “whose effort and commitment are fundamental to strengthen the cultural fabric in rural areas”.
The feature film ‘Sica’, directed by Carla La Subirán, talks about a woman obsessed with a shipwreck in which a family member dies. The film is ambitious on the Costa da Morte and, through the investigation of the protagonist, you can see how are the traces left by such a tragic event.
This is one of the 17 feature films and 6 short films that make up the programme and stand out for their relationship with women and their relationship with the rural world. Thus, the stories presented reflect diverse feminine realities in rural settings, and address issues such as identity, tradition and the fundamental role of women in the preservation and transformation of their communities.
Some of the films that comprise the series are outstanding productions of recent Spanish cinema, such as ‘Un amor’, by Isabel Coixet; the award-winning ‘El Cuerno’, by Jaione Camborda; ‘As Neves’, by Sonia Mndez; ‘Camino de la Fortuna’, by Jorge Alonso, or ‘Sica’, by Carla La subirán, which is the one that is projected today in Vimianzo.
The series, which in the case of the province of A Coruña reaches Vimianzo, Betanzos and San Sadurniño, is made up of 600 screenings and complementary activities in 320 locations throughout Spain and aims to bring cinema closer to rural areas, promoting greater awareness of the importance of these territories and the opportunities that can arise through access to culture.
