The Government’s deputy delegate in A Coruña, María Rivas, highlighted the Government’s commitment to the fight for equality and against gender violence. During his visit to the Concello de Fene to deliver the Travelling Suitcase against Gender Violence (MAVI), he recalled that the State Pact transferred to the 93 concellos of the province more than 760,000 euros in its last award.
Thus, he reported that the last six years the Concello de Fene received a total of 42,758.58 euros for the realization of sensitization and awareness activities that contribute to the creation of a society free of male violence.
The deputy delegate, who was received by the mayor of the town, Juventino Trigo, along with the other components of the municipal corporation, recalled that this initiative aims to promote equality and raise awareness of the need to make progress in the fight against male violence. With this stop in Fene he already toured 12 municipalities and 2 entities of the province of A Coruña.
The delivery of the Travelling Suitcase in Fene is framed within the activities programmed by the Subdelegation for this 25N, International Day for the Elimination of Gender Violence. Its objectives are to bring the neighborhood closer to reading on issues of feminism, violence against women, empowerment or self-esteem; promote critical thinking in the face of gender roles and stereotypes; promote reading as a tool for equality; raise awareness about gender violence; and promote the reading of texts written by women, so that society has female references in the field of culture.
The suitcase will contribute to the municipal activities of the 25th, remaining in Fene for the next three months. There are 14 books, 5 titles of child-youth reading such as ‘There is something more boring than being a pink princess?’, by Raquel Díaz Regueira, or ‘Tales for good nights for rebellious girls’, by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. 9 books for adults, including ‘Lies to Be a Real Woman. Manual for beginners’, by Rocío Salazar, and ‘Those days when I was bad’, by Inma López Silva.
The latest novelty is the incorporation of the collection of drawings ‘Brave Women’ donated by Rosa de Cabanas, representing well-known but also anonymous women, referents in different historical moments. Writers, painters, scientists, architects, sculptors, costureiras, teachers or activists on many occasions silenced by history.
Reading people who wish to do so, have a MAVI diary at their disposal in which they can reflect their experience through comments or suggestions. The objective is that they contribute to enrich the initiative that aims to be dynamic and improve throughout its journey.
The subdelegate stressed that the activities around 25 N are fundamental to promote a more egalitarian society, free of gender violence. In this sense, “the travelling suitcase is a small contribution to provide Fene’s neighbours and neighbours with information and training on equality and thus work actively to achieve a more just and egalitarian society”.
Currently in the province of A Coruña there are 2,617 active cases in the VioGén system, women who have some kind of protection from the Security Forces and Corps. “It is up to all administrations to do everything possible to improve the lives of the victims and to contribute to the fact that the number does not continue to grow,” said Rivas.
In this sense, he reminded the last campaign of the Ministry of Equality that through the question ‘Are you going to do something?’ he calls on the whole society to take sides, to stand side by side with the victims, and contribute to the change necessary to achieve a society where machismo and gender violence have no place.
