The delegate of the Government in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, received today in the Delegation the president of Dano Cerebral Galicia, Luciano Fernández Pintor, who was accompanied by the director of the entity, Leticia Vila, and the member of the board of directors, Manuela Candal, to whom the delegate conveyed his gratitude for the commendable work that this entity develops in the promotion of the personal autonomy of people with acquired brain damage and the support they provide to their families, “an objective, that of improving the lives of people, which this Government also shares,” he said.
At the meeting, the representatives of Dano Cerebral Galicia took the opportunity to transfer to Pedro Blanco their demands, especially those related to the assistance needs. In this sense, the association warned that the current specific resources of rehabilitation, daytime care, residential care, or occupational care, among others, reach a tiny part of the more than 35,000 people with acquired brain damage that exist in Galicia, so they demand that the right to continuity of care is guaranteed once these people are discharged from the hospital.
Brain Damage Galicia
The Galician Federation of Brain Damage (Brain Damage Galicia) is the entity that unites and represents the five associations of acquired brain damage that exist in Galicia (A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo), which bring together more than 2,200 members. In addition to coordinating associations, it carries out information and awareness-raising activities, training, research and legal advice, among others.
Acquired brain damage is a disability that is almost always caused by a stroke (78% of cases), but also by traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, anoxias or infections. It produces a series of sequels, many of them invisible, causing enormous incomprehension and impacting on a physical, sensory, cognitive, behavioral and emotional level, also bringing profound repercussions at a social and economic level.
