The Deputy Delegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, opened today the Training Day on the “Legal Framework of Sexual Violence: Assessments and Evidence in Sexual Assault”, organized as part of the activities of the Subdelegation of the Government in Lugo on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In the presentation of this day, the subdelegate stressed the need to expand the focus of action “to end the culture of impunity in the face of sexual violence, accompanying the victims to break the silence and acting relentlessly with the aggressors”.
The event was attended by two renowned experts: Patricia Faraldo, Professor of Penitentiary Law at the Universidade da Coruña, and Victoria Lareu, Professor of Legal Medicine at the University of Santiago, addressed key issues on gender and sexual violence, from a legal and scientific perspective.
In her speech, the subdelegate once again pointed out the devastating impact of gender violence in the country: in 2024 alone, 38 women were killed by male violence, adding to the 1,282 victims counted since 2003. He also reported that there was an increase in calls to 016 in the province, with 438 registered this year. Likewise, in the province of Lugo there are 182 persistent aggressors (with more than one victim), “a reality that highlights the urgency of addressing the problem from multiple fronts”.
Rodríguez also highlighted the commitment of the Government of Spain in the fight against sexual violence, highlighting pioneering policies such as the Organic Law of Integral Guarantee of Sexual Freedom, which places consent at the center. “Sexual violence requires cultural and social change, and equal education from childhood to prevent and break with the culture of impunity.”
Finally, Rodríguez called for the unity of institutions and citizenship to defend advances in equality and feminist politics, assuring that “there is much to do, but we will not take a step back in this fight.” In addition, he highlighted the support of the Government of Spain to the municipalities of the province of Lugo, which received more than 240,000 euros from the State Pact against Gender Violence in this last call to develop action programs against all types of violence against women.
