The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, said today that “it is time” to talk about male violence, that all aggressions are denounced and that society and public authorities expressly support all victims of male violence: “This is not the time to shut up.” This was manifested in the presentation of the perfo-poetic recital ‘Irmas Sonoras’, which was held this morning in the cultural center of O Vello Cárcere in the city of Lugo.
Isabel Rodríguez remarked that “it must be us, the women and men who are in public office, the first speakers of these complaints. What’s more, we must be the first and the first to set an example of this commitment.” He recalled that the Government of Spain shares this priority, “to provide suitable and safe channels for the voice of women victims of violence or harassment and to provide tools and support to get out of this spiral.” He also insisted on the “persecution of abusive men, with legal and police tools, and of all those who hide this tremendous reality,” stressing the need to “stop those who promote complicit silence.”
The subdelegate highlighted the role of culture, “one of the most powerful tools we have to move forward as a society”, to convey messages of equality and to raise awareness about the scourge of gender violence and its effects.
Along with the deputy delegate, the mayor of Lugo, Paula Alvarellos, also participated, whom Isabel Rodríguez thanked for the permanent collaboration of the Municipal Government in the promotion of equality policies.
Perfo-poetic recital
The Government Delegation in Galicia joined today in Lugo seven Galician artists in the recital ‘Irmas Sonoras’ to promote from culture the struggle of society against male violence. This event, which is held for the second consecutive year, combined on this occasion word, music and dance.
The intervention was designed and directed by the poet Yolanda Castaño, National Poetry Prize 2023. In it participated the poets and journalists Olalla Cociña and Nieves Neira, the writer and translator Tamara Andrés, as well as Olga Novo and Chus Pato, awarded with the National Poetry Prize in 2020 and in 2024, respectively.
The writers went out one by one of the cells, which still remain symbolically in the building, reading a fragment of her work about women, machismo and the obstacles that victims have in society. While doing this intervention, the artist Neves Seara performed a performance.
The act ended with the reading to the same voice of the poem ‘Matria’, giving meaning to the title of the act: ‘Irmas Sonoras’.
