The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, highlighted the future opportunity offered by artificial intelligence “to improve people’s lives” from the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI), held in Santiago de Compostela. He was accompanied at this event by the subdelegate of the Government in the province of A Coruña, María Rivas, and by the director of the Spanish Agency for Supervision of Artificial Intelligence (AESIA), Ignasi Belda.
Pedro Blanco placed special emphasis on the effort being made by the Government of Spain so that the advancement of this technology is transferred to a real social development, “so that the technological revolution that embodies artificial intelligence is put at the service of the citizens.”
Important role of Galicia in artificial intelligence
The launch in A Coruña of the headquarters of the AESIA “will make Galicia the European capital of artificial intelligence”, the delegate stressed. The actions and work of this body go in the direction of establishing an appropriate regulation and research of artificial intelligence.
In order for this objective to be successfully achieved, Pedro Blanco recalled the approval by the Government of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which outlines its actions in this field. With it, “Spain makes every effort to play a key role internationally in the development of this technology”, in the words of the delegate. Parallel to this regulation are other lines of action, such as the financing of university tuition fees for studies in artificial intelligence.
The delegate hoped that the ECAI “will serve to share ideas, reflect on the future and lay the foundations for the deployment of this technology.” It is something that the government is already doing, “looking for an innovative artificial intelligence, but also responsible, that is capable of combining ethics and transparency to guarantee the protection of the rights of citizens”.
“To achieve the objectives of this technology we must all work together: administrations, universities, companies and the citizens themselves,” said Pedro Blanco, who conveyed to the experts present at the convention the will of the Government to be protagonist of the digital transformation “through its strengthening and facilitating its arrival in both the public and private sectors from a point of view that benefits the whole society.”
