The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, today conveyed the will of the government to complete with an additional 50% the aid approved by the Xunta de Galicia for the shellfishermen of the Ría del Burgo until their return to extractive activity. This was transferred this morning to officials of the Cofradía de Pescadores y Mariscadores de A Coruña, among whom were the chief skipper, Javier Mariñas, and its president, Manuel Azumir. The meeting was held in the Government Delegation and was attended by the Government’s sub-delegate in the province, María Rivas.
The delegate recalled that the Xunta is the competent administration in fisheries and shellfish management and regretted that it continues to profile itself with the O Burgo estuary, repeatedly evading the exercise of its competences instead of working and reaching agreements with the sector, as the Government did and continues to do.
Indemnities
During the meeting, the delegate informed the members of the Brotherhood of the efforts made by the Ministry to make effective the payment of these last indemnities, reiterating that the Government “fulfilled and will comply with the sector with the same responsibility as it did in recent years.”
Faced with the extension of the period of execution of the work of regeneration of the estuary, the Ministry committed itself to the sector to pay an additional quarter of aid on the same conditions as the previous ones, and that would be added to the 3.6 million euros already paid.
However, as this new aid was not covered by the Royal Decree approved by the Government in 2022, it could not be paid from this regulation. This circumstance forced the drafting of a new decree to give legal form to this commitment. At the meeting this morning, the delegate confirmed to the fishermen that this document was already written and, once published, will allow the payment of outstanding payments.
