The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, presented this morning in the City of Maceda the Travelling Suitcase (MAVI) against gender violence, accompanied by the mayor of the municipality, Uxía Oviedo, and the head of the Unit against Violence on Women of the Subdelegation, Alida Iglesias.
This initiative was born with the intention of bringing reading to all audiences and inviting reflection, awareness and awareness on issues as decisive as violence against women, equality, stereotypes and gender roles.
The Travelling Suitcase against Gender Violence began its tour in 2022 at the Pereiro de Aguiar Penitentiary Center, then continuing to travel through the various women’s information centers (CIMs) of the province and currently arriving at the municipal libraries of the Ourense municipalities.
This initiative of the Subdelegation of the Government in Ourense seeks to bring together the reading on issues of feminism, empowerment and self-esteem; promote critical thinking; favor the reading of these texts by women in situations of vulnerability; and sensitize society in general.
To this end, 17 books arrived today in Maceda in the Travelling Suitcase. “Books that raise awareness, tell experiences and inform in literary support of the great problem that gender violence poses and against which we have to fight,” said the deputy delegate during the presentation, without forgetting that it is a city council very active at a cultural level and aware of this problem as a reflection of its adherence to the Plan of Prevention of Gender Violence.”
In addition, he recalled that the Ministry of Equality comes from approving the distribution of funds of the State Pact Against Gender Violence, “and specifically Maceda was benefited with 10,000 euros to do activities that help prevent it,” he explained.
Finally, she highlighted the serious problem of gender-based violence. “We must remember that in the province we currently have 543 active cases and we must always remain vigilant,” he insisted.
For her part, the municipal councilor, Uxía Oviedo, was very satisfied because the Travelling Suitcase arrived in Maceda and wanted to put in value all those who make possible initiatives such as this. “I appreciate the enormous daily work of Ana e Isa, psychologist and advisor of the CIM, but it is true that to do all the activities that are organized throughout the year it is essential that there are funds, so we also thank the Government of Spain for its collaboration to do activities that put feminism in the focus of public debate and indicate what remains to be done in the fight against gender violence.”
In addition, he highlighted the arrival of new titles to the municipal library. “We have a library with a lot of books and we are very happy to have this initiative now. Among the books in the suitcase we can see illustrated novel, novel, essay... it is very important to raise awareness about gender violence and feminism through culture and reading, and that this message reaches all kinds of audiences in such diverse ways,” he said.
