The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, visited today the Non-Governmental Organization of Humanitarian Aid FIET, to give her the “Travelling Suitcase against Gender Violence” (MAVI).
The subdelegate thanked the collaboration of the FIET NGO that works in the defense of people who are in a situation of social injustice, such as refugees, victims of trafficking, and gender violence, and all those who suffer serious violations of their fundamental rights; so “to be able to bring a resource such as the MAVI that has how to end up promoting equality and raising awareness of the need to continue advancing in the fight against male violence; it is a satisfaction, since it allows us to open up to social entities that work with especially vulnerable people” said Rivas.
This collaborative activity is also part of the campaign that will be developed by the Subdelegation of the Government in A Coruña to raise awareness against trafficking in human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation, which is clearly commemorated on Monday, September 23, and which will focus on the fact that exploitation is violence.
The Travelling Suitcase against Gender Violence (MAVI) is a project of the Violence against Women Unit of the Government Subdelegation that has a total of 82 books distributed in 5 suitcases: 56 aimed at adults and 26 aimed at children.
Practically all the books are written by women, on topics that affect women, including books in Galician and with Galician authors such as Inma López Silva, Chis Oliveira, Priscila Retamazo, Ledicia Costas, Susana Fuerte, Rosa Cobo, María Canosa. Also included are books on abuse, and trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, such as the comic “Amelia: History of a struggle” or the biography “The revolt of the whores”, both by Amelia Tiganus a feminist, Romanian activist based in Spain.
The latest addition to the MAVI is a collection of drawings donated by Rosa de Cabanas entitled “Brave Women”, which represents well-known but also anonymous women, each with its value in the society of the moment, women referents writers, painters, scientists, architects, sculptors, seamstresses, teachers, activists on many occasions silenced by history.
All the books incorporate two QR codes that through their scanning can lead us on the one hand to the website of the Government Delegation Against Gender Violence where you can find the resources available to the State for attention to the victims of male violence; and on the other, they also give us access to the action guide against male violence of the Ministry of Equality.
During the visit to Subdelegada, she had the opportunity to learn from her coordinator and the psychologist about the activities carried out by FIET through its “Rescue and Restore” projects aimed at the comprehensive care of girls and boys in contexts of extreme vulnerability, especially in situations of prostitution, sexual exploitation or labor; its “Solidarity Office” of legal assistance and integral assistance; and international cooperation programs.
The MAVI will be in charge of FIET for the next three months so that they can develop reading and debate activities aimed at promoting critical thinking in the face of gender roles and stereotypes. Using reading as a tool for equality, to raise awareness and encourage society to also have female references in the field of culture.
In addition, each suitcase has a diary in which readers who wish to do so can leave comments or suggestions, and thus contribute to enriching this initiative that aspires to improve during their journey.
