The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, and the mayor of the Barco de Valdeorras, Alfredo García, co-chaired the Local Security Board in which the situation of citizen security in the municipality, cases of gender violence, the Master Plan for Coexistence in schools and security forecasts for the upcoming local festivities were analyzed.
With regard to citizen security, the data presented at the meeting showed that in O Barco de Valdeorras there was a slight increase in serious and less serious crimes, respecting the same period of the previous year, although they are maintained in figures similar to other towns in the province.
This small upturn is mainly due to cybercrime. Scams for providing bank details via phone calls, fraudulent sales via the internet, offers from fake telephone or banking companies, are some of the most frequently reported cases.
However, in this regard, it highlights the increase in the resolution of serious, minor and administrative offences by the Civil Guard in relation to the previous year.
In the area of gender violence, all participants in the Local Board stressed the importance of prevention, education and follow-up of cases. Highlighting the security forces present, the coordination they maintain among themselves in this matter.
Regarding the needs raised during the meeting, both the National Police (which has a documentation unit in O Barco), the Civil Guard and the local police of the municipality agreed that the increase in means and agents translates into greater security for the citizen. Therefore, the Government’s deputy delegate collected their request and reminded them that “every year the State Public Employment Offer increases the number of new additions of civil guards and national police throughout Spain. Specifically in Galicia, there will be 3,000 new agents in each of these bodies from the call that is currently underway.”
Eladio Santos concluded by stressing that “although problems such as cybercrime and administrative infractions need to be addressed, O Barco is a safe and liveable place”.
In addition to the deputy delegate and the mayor, the territorial delegate of the Presidency of the Xunta de Galicia, Beatriz Fernández, representatives of the Civil Guard, National Police and Local Police of the Boat were also present; and the Open Commercial Center and the Business Association of Valdeorras were invited, to analyze together the situation of the municipality.
