The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, claimed the commitment of the Government of Spain with a Camino de Santiago free of male violence. It did so at the presentation of the annual campaign No Caminas Sola, which is developed during the summer to ensure the safety of women who pilgrimage through the different Xacobe routes. The informative event took place in the pilgrims’ hostel of Briallos, in the town hall of Puertas, where Losada was accompanied by the mayor, Ricardo Martínez, the councilor for Equality, Chus Fontán, the councilor for Culture, Ana María Peña, and other members of the corporation, as well as by the Colonel of the Civil Guard in Pontevedra, Simón Venzal and by the Commissioner of Vigo-Redonda, Ramiro José Gómez. The mobile office of attention to the pilgrim of the Civil Guard was also present at the event.
The subdelegate explained that the No Caminas Sola initiative offers pilgrims all the information about emergency services and the resources of the Security Forces and Corps to which they can go along the Camino. In this line, he thanked the collaboration of the 400 establishments in the province that join the campaign. Among them, the Subdelegation distributed more than 400 posters and 8,300 information cards at points such as hostels, tourist offices, offices of the National Police, Civil Guard and Local Police, health centers, hospitals and pharmacies of the municipalities through which the Xacobe routes that travel through the province pass.
However, Abel Losada invited the other establishments and companies to join the 398 current information points of the province, which have posters and #card printed in Spanish, English and Galician and which also incorporate a QR code that gives access to available resources and information on gender violence.
The subdelegate also explained that “we have the AlertCops application, which we can easily install on the mobile, and which allows to communicate alerts in real time and send the geolocation”.
Abel Losada stressed that “more and more women are making this pilgrimage for various reasons and we are seeing how year after year their presence is going to increase”. In fact, they already represent 53% of the people who make the way, “women who in many cases walk alone and without company,” said the deputy delegate, who highlighted security as “a fundamental social, political and economic element of the Camino de Santiago.”
The subdelegate also took the opportunity to explain and value the work, carried out in this campaign by both the Civil Guard and the National Police, as well as to thank the College of Pharmacists and Pharmacists of Galicia for its involvement in it. “This campaign is part of the Government’s action to work for a more egalitarian society, a safer and therefore freer environment for all women. Our commitment is to continue working so that in the near future, such initiatives are not necessary,” he concluded.
