A Coruña, August 5, 2024.- The Government Delegation in Galicia today rejected through a minute's silence the male crime committed last week in the city of A Coruña, and that raises the two victims of gender violence this year in Galicia. The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, presided over this act of condemnation and pain for this crime, which she described as unacceptable.
In his words, he remarked that “every woman who is the victim of aggression, homicide or any manifestation of this violence takes us back as a democracy and as a free society.” And he reiterated the Government’s unwavering commitment to the defense of equality and women’s rights and security: “We owe it to Mercedes and we owe it to the more than 5,400 women who today in Galicia are under the protection of the Viogen police tracking system.”
Before observing the minute of silence, María Rivas conveyed condolences and affection on behalf of herself and the Government to the Mercedes family, accompanied by workers from the Government Delegation and members of the State security forces and bodies. Among them were the Superior Chief of Police of Galicia, Ramón Gómez; and the Lieutenant Colonel of the Command of the Civil Guard of A Coruña, Jorge Bodelón. The head of the Coordination Unit against Gender Violence of the Delegation, María Debén, and the Councilor for Social Welfare, Participation and Equality of the City of A Coruña, Nereida Canosa, and the Councilor for Infrastructures of the same City Council, Noemí Díaz, also attended.
Confirmation To Government Delegation against Gender Violence, this morning he described the crime of Mercedes Ríos, 74 years old, as a male crime, which makes it the 69 committed in Galicia since 2003. With Mercedes, 7 women have been murdered by their partners or former partners so far this year in Spain. Since the start of the statistics in 2003, 1,272 women were murdered in Spain for machista crimes. “Each name reaffirms the commitment of this Government to eradicate the gratuitous and senseless violence suffered by women just because they are women,” said the deputy delegate.
