The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, visited today the municipality of Boqueixón to deliver the “Travelling Suitcase against Gender Violence” (MAVI). This initiative, which has already covered 10 municipalities and entities in the province of A Coruña, aims to promote equality and raise awareness of the need to continue advancing in the fight against male violence.
The deputy delegate, who was received in the city by its mayor Ovidio Rodeiro, whom she thanked for the reception, pointed out the municipalist nature of this initiative, stressing that the collaboration and involvement of the municipalities is fundamental for the success of the same, since it is the municipalities, especially in rural areas, that can make available to the neighborhood the books that each suitcase incorporates and also develop animation activities to read.
María Rivas indicated that the municipal involvement in these actions contributes to building from the local level a more egalitarian, fair society and free of male violence.
In this sense, there are 5 objectives of this campaign: to bring neighbours closer to reading on issues of feminism, violence against women, empowerment or self-esteem, novels, etc. ; promote critical thinking in the face of gender roles and stereotypes; promote reading as a tool for equality; raise awareness of gender violence; and promote the reading of texts written by women, so that society has female references in the field of culture.
The suitcase will remain in Boqueixón for up to three months, and contains a total of 14 titles. So there are 5 child-youth reading titles such as “Is there anything more boring than being a pink princess” by Raquel Diaz Regueira, or “Tales for good nights for rebellious girls” by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. It also contains 9 books for adults such as ‘Lies to Be a Real Woman. Manual for beginners’ by Rocío Salazar and ‘Those days when we were bad’ by Inma López Silva.
The latest addition to the MAVI is a collection of drawings donated by Rosa de Cabanas entitled “Brave Women”, which represents well-known but also anonymous women, each with its value in the society of the moment, women referents writers, painters, scientists, architects, sculptors, seamstresses, teachers, activists on many occasions silenced by history.
Finally, the suitcase consists of a diary in which readers who wish to do so can reflect their experience through comments or suggestions with the aim of contributing to enrich this initiative that aims to be dynamic and improve throughout its journey.
“The travelling suitcase is a small contribution to offer the neighbors and neighbors of Boqueixón information and training on equality and thus work actively to achieve a more just and egalitarian society,” said Rivas. In this regard, the subdelegate referred to the last campaign of the Ministry of Equality that through the question “Are you going to do something?” involve the whole society in taking part in the necessary change to achieve that more egalitarian society and where machismo and gender violence have no place.
The subdelegate recalled that there are 2,422 cases of gender violence active in the province of A Coruña in the VioGén system for the protection of victims of gender violence. “There are 2,422 women who need our support, our protection, but they also need us to bet and work to educate and raise awareness so that we do not continue adding more cases every day”, so MAVI is “an essential tool to achieve a more egalitarian, fairer society and free of male violence”.
