The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, supervised today accompanied by the provincial head of Traffic, Alberto Rodríguez, and members of the Civil Guard subsector, the evolution of the speed control campaign focused on conventional roads and urban roads deployed throughout this week, and which will end on Sunday, July 21. The initiative, which is part of the annual programming of the DGT, aims to achieve a reduction in the average speed and raise awareness about the risk of improper speed in traffic accidents.
The deputy delegate traveled to Guitiriz and assessed on the ground “this reinforcement in the controls, so that people perceive speed as a risk factor, since it is present in 23% of fatal accidents”, she explained. According to data from the General Directorate of Traffic, 60% of drivers recognise that they travel above speed limits on conventional roads, almost 50% in urban areas, and more than 60% recognise that they travel faster than is permitted on motorways and motorways.
The surveillance and control campaign aims to draw the attention of drivers to the incompatibility of high speed with driving, “as is already assumed in the case of the use of the belt or helmet, or the consumption of alcohol,” said the subdelegate. As indicated by the DGT, there is a lack of awareness about the impact and consequences of improper driving, especially in the event of a traffic accident.
Isabel Rodríguez thanked the traffic agents for their work in this campaign, “strengthening the controls on the most dangerous sections and guaranteeing the road safety of all road users.” He determined that “excesses of speed have a direct impact both on the increase in the risk of the accident while driving, and on the increase in the severity of injuries of injured people.”
ASPAYM campaign
A group of people from ASPAYM Lugo was also present at this place, presenting the campaign “Don’t run, in the bebas, in the wheel changes”, which they launch in collaboration with the General Directorate of Traffic, Civil Guard and the Government Subdelegations. The fundamental element of the initiative is the active participation of volunteers, people with spinal injuries victims of a traffic accident, occasionally accompanying traffic agents in charge of carrying out the controls.
The ASPAYM volunteer approaches the detained vehicle, conveying the common message of the campaign and demonstrating at the same time, with his presence, the consequences and the #irreversible consequences of the reckless acts.
