The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas; the mayor of Valdoviño, Alberto González; and the Head of the Command of the Civil Guard in A Coruña, Fernando Pedreira, signed this morning in the course of the extraordinary meeting of the Local Security Board convened for this purpose, the protocol of accession to the VioGen system for the protection of women victims of gender violence.
María Rivas said that it is a priority for the subdelegation of the Government that municipalities become part of this system of surveillance and protection of victims. “It is the people who make up the local police who, by proximity and knowledge, can enrich and improve this service, because it is undoubtedly the local administration that is closest to the neighbors and neighbors.”
With the signing of the agreement, the city of Valdoviño already completes the procedures to join the 22 municipalities of the province of A Coruña fully integrated into the VioGen system. With this new step taken at the meeting of the Local Security Board, Valdoviño is one of the 9 municipalities in the process of incorporation that will materialize in the coming months.
The deputy delegate and more the mayor showed their satisfaction for this step in favor of the safety of women who take the difficult step of denouncing the situation of gender violence in which they live. “VioGen is an essential and necessary tool to make decisive progress in the protection of victims of male violence. The fight against gender violence is a task in which all institutions must be fully involved,” said Rivas.
Currently in the province of A Coruña there are 2,268 victims of gender violence with active cases. “Our daily priority is the 2,268 women who live in our province and who need police presence and care to feel safe every day and move forward with their lives, there are 2,268 reasons that force us to continue working to improve their protection and in many cases that of minors or their dependants. The fight against gender violence is a task to which we owe ourselves at every minute and in every part of the province.”
In this regard, María Rivas made a new call for municipalities that are not yet part of VioGen to join the system, and thus with the involvement and collaboration of all administrations, “we can continue moving towards the eradication of violence against women.”
He also stressed the importance of working also through the Interinstitutional Coordination Tables, which are currently in operation in the province of A Coruña 39, and invited the city of Valdoviño to establish and put into operation his own.
VioGen allows the Local Police to have information on active cases of male violence within the municipality, and they can help in the follow-up and control of some cases, as a general rule of those that are considered low risk or not appreciated. In the cases that are most at risk, it is the Civil Guard that is responsible for the follow-up.
The subdelegate also highlighted the activities carried out under the State Pact against Gender Violence, and for which the city of Valdoviño received a total of 15,777.84 euros since 2018. They are another example of the collaboration between the different institutions in this matter: “They are training, awareness-raising and prevention actions that are carried out at the local level, very necessary to advance collective awareness.”
