The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, today encouraged the citizens to participate in the elections to the European Parliament next Sunday, June 9. “These are very important elections, because in the European Parliament measures are taken that affect the daily life of sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, industry or decisions such as the arrival of funds, such as the PRTRs that are transforming Galicia,” he said.
The delegate made this call during the presentation in the Government Delegation of the subjects that will be distributed that day in the 2,337 electoral colleges distributed throughout Galicia, to which are called to attend 2,702,442 Galicians and Galicians, 109,690 of them for the first time.
Pedro Blanco indicated that in these polling stations there will be a total of 3,922 polling stations, with their respective ballot boxes, attended by 11,766 people chosen by lot. To these must be added the 311 employees of the Government Delegation and the subdelegations that will attend the incidents and the 2,547 representatives of the Administration in the electoral colleges, who will be the people in charge of publicizing the final results of the votes and the data of participation throughout the day.
In addition, Pedro Blanco recalled that, to ensure that the right to vote is exercised in Galicia normally, the Government will deploy more than 7,000 agents: 2.101 from the National Police; 4.278 from the Civil Guard and 996 from the Local Police.
Regarding the vote by mail, he recalled that the deadline for voting is open until this Friday, June 7, and pointed out that in Galicia a total of 36,205 applications to exercise this right by post were accepted.
Another aspect highlighted by the government delegate in Galicia is that this electoral process “is going to be the most inclusive until now”. Along with the 78,657,310 printed ballot papers of the 34 candidates, 80 blind people will have accessible voting kits in braille and, as a novelty, the electoral colleges of Santiago de Compostela will have a system of signage through pictograms, a pilot experience that will be developed in 19 other Spanish cities.
Pedro Blanco took advantage of the event to thank all the professionals, guarantees of public security, their effort and work, as well as words of gratitude for all the volunteers of the administration and citizens who will form the voting tables, in charge of ensuring that the electoral day progresses normally and that the right to vote is guaranteed. “Let us vote for a Europe with present and future”, he encouraged.
The European Parliament elections will decide a total of 720 MEPs, of which Spain elects 61. There is only one constituency at the national level, the difference between the autonomous or general constituencies. Thus, there is only a single list of candidates for the whole of Spain. The budget allocated to Galicia for the organization of these elections amounts to 4,636,905 euros.
