The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, presided this morning together with the mayor of Mugardos, Juan Domingo de Deus, the extraordinary meeting of the Local Security Board where an analysis of the indicators of security of the municipality was made and the formulas of coordination as well as the needs for the security device for the Octopus Festival that already reaches its XXXII edition.
The subdelegate stressed in the analysis of the data on citizen security, that Mugardos has one of the lowest crime rates in the province, and well below the provincial, regional and state rates. In 2023, the city council recorded 22 crimes per 1,000 inhabitants, 15 points below the provincial rate, 13 points below the autonomous rate and 30 points below the State average. The subdelegate also wanted to highlight the progressive improvement in the level of clarification, as well as the decrease in the total number of prison violations registered in the last year.
Regarding the device for the festivities, an evaluation was made of the event in recent editions in which only small incidents were recorded that were resolved by the effectiveness of the police action.
For this year, the device planned for the Octopus Festival, Galician Tourist Interest Festival, will delimit the space through several areas of action where there will be presence of both Local Police and Civil Guard and Civil Traffic Guard as well as other types of personnel in charge of Civil Protection and volunteering. In addition, an Advanced Command Post will be established in which all police forces plus Civil Protection will be integrated to coordinate the device around this celebration.
María Rivas pointed out the importance of the collaboration and coordination of the administrations as an essential tool to improve security protection during celebrations, events with tourist interest and patron saint’s parties, and called on all attendees to always respect the security measures and count on the help of the agents deployed in these events. He also congratulated the city council for the success in the installation of a violet point as a safe space for attention, information and help to victims of calquer type of sexist aggression, and thus do a fundamental job in making visible to society.
VioGen
At the meeting, there was also a specific section to analyse data on gender-based violence. The subdelegate reported that today, in the province of A Coruña there are 2,253 victims within the VioGen system.
María Rivas stressed that the high number of victims directly challenges our action. “Each of the 2,253 victims is a reminder that we must work daily to protect them. The fight against gender violence is a primary objective of the Government’s subdelegation, which is why we are working to ensure that all municipalities with local police incorporate this system of victim protection.
In this way, the deputy delegate of the Government and the mayor of Mugardos agreed to initiate the procedures for the incorporation of the local police of Mugardos into the Comprehensive Monitoring System in cases of Gender Violence, VioGen system, of the Ministry of the Interior.
The subdelegate recalled that in the province there are already 22 municipalities incorporated in this system and that another 9 municipalities are currently in the process of accession. He also stressed the importance of working also through the Interinstitutional Coordination Tables, which are currently in operation in the province of A Coruña 39, one of them in the city of Mugardos.
María Rivas again pointed out the collaboration and coordination of administrations as an essential tool to improve the protection of victims of gender violence. “It is the local police who are most attached to the territory, know the environment and the neighborhood better, and their contribution is very important.”
Finally, the subdelegate cited the activities carried out under the State Pact against Gender Violence as another example of the collaboration between the different institutions in this matter, and for which the city of Mugardos received a total of 25,752.34 euros since 2018. “These are training, awareness and prevention actions that are carried out at the local level and that are very necessary to advance social awareness.”
