The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, participated this morning in the 44th meeting of the International Permanent Commission of the River Miño, CPIRM, which was attended by the Spanish and Portuguese delegation presided respectively by their respective ambassador, Juan Francisco Montalbán Carrasco for the part of Spain and Lenia Areal for the Portuguese part, and which brought together representatives of the various entities of both countries with competence in the management of the international stretch of the River Miño.
This Commission is a collegiate body that is responsible for discussing proposals aimed at improving the biological and fishing conditions and the conservation of resources and the protection of habitat in the International Stretch of the River Miño (TIRM). At this XLIV meeting the International Permanent Commission of the River Miño discussed aspects related to hunting and fishing on the banks of the international stretch of the River Miño as well as the problem of pollution in the river’s river course.
The Spanish Delegation to the CPIRM, which is a subordinate body to the International Commission of Limits with France and Portugal (CIL), was presided over by the Naval Commander of the Miño and participated as spokesmen the Subdelegate of the Government, on behalf of the Government Delegation in Galicia, the Provincial Service of Backs of Pontevedra (MITECO), the Subdirectorate of Fisheries and Fishing Markets (Xunta de Galicia), the Fisheries Service of the Autonomous Region of Galicia, the Autonomous Province of Galicia.
The subdelegate stressed that “this Commission of the faith of the close ties and good understanding between two countries that share a natural border and have multiple common interests, as well as of the total administrative cooperation between two neighboring countries.”
The CPIRM fixed the date of the annual signing of the Treaty of Limits, initialled by both countries on board a boat in the waters of the Miño, which will be in the month of September, as usual.
The Miño River International Permanent Commission
The creation of the Permanent International Commission of the River Miño (CPIRM) arose, with the updating of the Fisheries Regulations of 1969, as an advisory body of the Ambassador of Limits of both States and presided over by the representatives of the Spanish and Portuguese navies of war. Currently, the delegations are chaired by both Spanish and Portuguese Naval Commanders and meet annually and preferably in the month of May.
The CPIRM depends directly on the International Commission of Limits between Portugal and Spain (CIL) and is composed of representatives of each of the following sectors of the Administration of both countries: Defence (Portuguese National Maritime Authority and Navy), sectors of the Fisheries Administration, Safety in Navigation, Maritime Transport, Environment, Spanish Government Delegation in Galicia and Foreign Affairs.
Among its functions is the treatment of regulation of all matters related to the different fishing modalities in the border section of the Miño.
