The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, put Cabo Ortegal as an example of the power of transformation that tourism has in the territories. It did so within the framework of the events of the first anniversary of the declaration of Cabo Ortegal as UNESCO World Xeopark, where it highlighted the rich heritage of this territory, with 56 places of geological interest and several of them of international relevance.
María Rivas indicated that these places “talk about the formation of these landscapes, but also our history” and realize that “the wealth of Galicia are not only its people, its gastronomy or its culture, but the environment in which we move make them truly privileged”.
At the event, in which he was accompanied by, among others, the president of the Provincial Council, Valentín González Formoso; the territorial delegate of the Xunta in Ferrol, Martina Aneiros, and the mayor of Cedeira and president of the board of directors of the xeopark, Pablo Moreda, the underdelegate took the opportunity to congratulate the provincial body and the Association for the management of the xeopark for this year of work in the dissemination of the values of natural space. Also for the activities programmed to celebrate this anniversary, which included guided tours, informative talks and educational workshops “designed for people who love nature, geology enthusiasts and, ultimately, anyone who has an interest in knowing more about the landscape richness of the regions of Ortegal and Ferrolterra”.
He also took the opportunity to remember the work begun with Diputación three years ago with the implementation of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for the Cabo Ortegal Xeopark, “a plan focused on geotourism that sought the improvement of small tourism companies, the exaltation of gastronomy and local products, and the creation of a network of interpretation centers of the xeopark,” he said.
In this line, he recalled that this plan, which obtained 1.5 million euros from the funds of the Government’s Recovery Plan, “promotes the transition to a more green and sustainable tourism model, digital, that prioritizes energy efficiency and that stands out for its quality.”
Finally, he thanked all the people and institutions involved in obtaining the recognition of UNESCO for their work during these years and recalled that the Government, “which is very proud that this space is today a reference throughout the world”, will continue to be on the side of the neighbors of the municipalities that make up the xeopark to make this claim “the incentive to transform the economy of this privileged territory”.
