The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, today called on the Civil Guard of Galicia to put or emphasize the protection of the victims of male violence and the prevention of the recklessness that is behind the increase of fatal accidents on the roads. He did so during the commemoration of the 180th anniversary of the founding of the Civil Guard, which was held in the Pazo de Mariñán.
After remarking that “we cannot give up one millimeter in front of gender violence”, the delegate recalled that in Galicia “there are 4,900 women who are part of the police monitoring system of male violence” and that “1,300 men are repeat offenders”. Faced with this reality, the delegate advanced the implementation of the new Viogen System and the reform of the State Pact against Gender Violence, which is in preparation.
With respect to road safety, Pedro Blanco highlighted the leading role of the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard of Galicia in the protection of road users. He described as outrageous the rise in fatalities in Galicia this year and highlighted the news with respect to alcohol controls and surveillance that they promoted from the Traffic Sector of Galicia itself “and that we are already to apply”.
Operating results
In his speech, the government delegate congratulated the Civil Guard assigned to Galicia, in the person of its Chief General, for the operational results “that allowed us to end the year 2023 as the third safest autonomous community in Spain”. And he pointed out that the Civil Guard achieved in 2023 the best crime resolution rate of the last decade, clarifying more than 19,000 prison violations in the territory of its responsibility.
For the government delegate, these results support the path “that we started five years ago”, and that materializes in three areas: the reinforcement of personnel, with 200 new personnel; the renovation of facilities, such as Santiago, Xove or Verín, and the modernization of equipment to adapt them to new forms of crime, such as the Arroba teams or the recent EPRAT of reconstruction of traffic accidents”.
Commemorative event
The ceremony commemorating the anniversary brought together the various authorities in the Pazo de Mariñán, as chief general of the 15th Zone of the Civil Guard, Miguel Ángel González; the deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas; the mayor of Bergondo, the president of the Provincial Council, the territorial delegate and the general director of Emergencies and Interior of the Xunta and the Superior Chief of Police of Galicia.
During the same, 16 crossings with White Badge of the Order of Merit of the Civil Guard were imposed on civil guards and other people for their collaboration with the Area of Galicia. Twelve recognitions were also granted to agents who went to the reserve in the last year. In this case, the Area of Galicia recovered the tradition of handing over with this recognition a hanger flag, teaches that it has its origin in the reign of Isabel II, in coincidence with the foundation of the Armed Institute.
