The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, participated this morning in the delivery of high-visibility reflective elements to vulnerable road groups, together with agents of the Traffic Subsector and the provincial head of Traffic, Paula Yubero. The initiative is part of the awareness campaign on vulnerable users on the conventional roads of Galicia that is being developed by the DGT in Galicia until next Sunday, day 12.
The subdelegate warned of the high mortality that the roads of the province are registering, “with a very negative beginning of the year, since we have today a total of 12 fatalities, half of the fatalities that there were in the whole of the previous year.” This figure represents a remarkable growth and well above the average data of recent years. In addition, 66% of the deceased, or 8 of the 12, were vulnerable users: four motorcyclists, two moped users and two pawns. The subdelegate stressed that “the fact that only 4 of the fatalities registered in the province so far this year had traveled by car attracts much attention and demonstrates the need to call for prudence.”
During the event, held in San Amaro (Barro), a neuralgic point of the passage of pilgrims, highlighted the importance of responsible individual behaviors when traveling by road. This respect highlighted that one of the deceased motorcyclists did not wear his helmet fastened and the two drowning pawns walked at night, wearing dark clothes and with clearly reckless behavior.
Abel Losada also reported that 66% of the fatal accidents occurred on roads of regional competition, 3 on national roads and 1 on a local road, so he appealed “to stop political campaigning with road accidents and to cooperate among all administrations to reduce these data”.
Surveillance and awareness campaign
This awareness campaign on vulnerable groups is marked as a goal to reeducate pawns, cyclists and motorcyclists about their own vulnerable position, reminding them of the need to make themselves visible with reflective elements and pieces, use specific protection systems such as helmets as well as appropriate clothing to ride on two wheels or comply with and respect the rules that specifically affect them. It also seeks to sensitize drivers about the risk exposure of these users and the need to maintain the constant level of alert each time they encounter a pawn, a cyclist or a motorcyclist.
The agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, in charge of carrying out the campaign, will remember throughout the week the convenience of reducing or moderating the speed, extreme caution we cross and turn, look through the rear-view mirrors frequently, use the intermittent signs of signaling and respect the lateral distance of one and a half meters to advance a cyclist or pawn. In addition, the agents will also deliver high-visibility reflective elements to vulnerable people who travel by road without using them, and specific printed material will be distributed in several languages.
Vulnerable users
According to the General Directorate of Traffic, road users in vulnerable situations are those who, due to different circumstances, either due to their physical characteristics or by means of displacement used, are more likely to be involved in a traffic accident or to be killed or injured as a result of it. Therefore, the concept includes pawns in general (children, adolescents, adults, elderly and people with reduced mobility), as well as cyclists, motorcyclists, moped drivers and tractor or quad vehicles.
