The government delegate, Pedro Blanco, today acknowledged the work of the researchers of the Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC), “whose effort advances Galicia towards a better future for the whole society.” He did so during a visit to the Marine Research Institute in Vigo, where he held a meeting with the delegate of the agency in Galicia, Carmen González, in which they deepened the projects of the agency in the community.
The lines of research developed by the CSIC in Galicia revolve around the most important productive sectors for the territory, such as agriculture, fisheries, food and historical and cultural heritage. “We must strengthen scientific advice in sectors vital to the Galician economy, since science is the great ally to respond to the challenges ahead. Science must be at their side to support them and help them continue to grow,” said Pedro Blanco. In total, more than 850 people work for the CSIC in Galicia, 230 at the Marine Research Institute of Vigo.
During the tour, he learned first-hand the work of the center in the biology and ecology of marine organisms, an example are the studies related to the breeding of the octopus or the actions they are carrying out to evaluate the current situation of wild populations of seahorses on the coast. “We must continue to provide better resources to our professionals, defend their projects, to make our country a better place for science,” he added.
The Institute of Marine Research of Vigo leads in Galicia the Program of Marine Sciences of Galicia, one of the complementary plans of the PRTR, which has the support of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities directed by Diana Morant.
Among others, the Institute of Marine Research leads within the program the project “Digital twins for the hygienization of processes of the food industry”, developed jointly by the Biosystems and Bioprocess Engineering group and the Recycling and Waste Recovery Group (REVAL), and the project “Animal behavior and conservation of marine resources in the social-spatial interface: the case of coastal elasmobranchs”, of the Ecology and Marine Resources group.
