The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, warned today about the increase in vulnerable users among the people killed in traffic accidents in Galicia last year, which accounted for 36% of the fatalities on Galician roads. He explained this during the meeting of the Autonomous Commission of Traffic and Road Safety, which he chaired this morning in the Government Delegation.
The delegate drew attention to the increase in almost 20% of the deceased among the groups of motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians, who increasingly have a greater weight in the statistics of victims. This upward trend began in 2020 and last year reached 32 people who died from these groups.
Regarding the rest of the annual balance of 2023, Pedro Blanco highlighted the decrease of two victims on the roads of Galicia, consolidating the trend that marked the first months of the year. In total, 88 fatalities occurred in a total of 88 fatal traffic accidents. “If we look at the provinces, the steepest descent occurred in the province of A Coruña, with 40% fewer people dead. On the contrary, Ourense added 10 more deaths than in the previous year on its roads,” he explained.
The delegate drew attention to the significant increase in the number of deceased persons who did not make use of the security post: “We talked about the fact that last year, 30% of those killed in tourism, vans and lorries were not wearing their cyclones.” To this reality, he added the fact that four out of ten tourist drivers who died in 2023 in Galicia had tested positive for alcohol in the subsequent analyses, “a percentage that increases to 43% in the case of skates who died in a hit-and-run”.
The Commission addressed the strategies to combat this accident and these figures: “A strategy in which all administrations collaborate and that combines actions on infrastructure, a zero tolerance policy with offenders and planning,” said the delegate.
