The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, visited the facilities of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (CCS) of Vigo accompanied by the head of the center, José María Suárez de Llanos, and by the maritime captain, Manuel García, with whom he supervised the different functions and capacities of the Society of Rescue and Maritime Safety (SASEMAR), which has been operating in Vigo since 1996. Abel Losada highlighted the work carried out by this maritime service from its base in the Olivic City and highlighted, especially, the “enormous work it does both to attend emergencies and in the control of maritime traffic.”
The subdelegate explained that during the year 2023 the CCS of Vigo dealt with 159 emergencies of which 86 had to do with boats. More than half of those in distress at sea (49) were recreational boats, 13 merchant boats and 7 fishing boats. In addition, they acted in 5 environment-related emergencies.
Salvamento Marítima also carries out a very important work of maritime traffic control in a 2023 in which Vigo moved more than 4.8 million tons of goods. Over the past year it controlled 8,372 ships, having the capacity to maintain direct contact with all the ships in the area of the Maritime Captaincy of Vigo, which covers the Rías de Vigo and Pontevedra.
During the visit, the subdelegate supervised the work that is carried out in the control center located in the maritime station of Vigo and approached the rescue ship María Pita and the salvage Mirach.
Losada highlighted the efforts of the CCS of Vigo in the field of emergencies and highlighted “its fundamental role in the protection of human life at sea and, at the same time, marine, animal and plant life, since the fight against pollution is a goal as a country and a challenge as a priority society for the Government of Spain in order to advance the ecological transition of the different economic activities”.
Salvamento de Vigo has a human team of 46 people composed of controllers, administrative staff and seafarers on board.
