The Subdelegation of the Government in Pontevedra delivered to the Food Bank of Vigo 65,000 kilos of frozen halibut from the fishing ground of Newfoundland and captured by the fishing vessel Villa de Nores. The fish was confiscated after the inspection carried out by the Agriculture and Fisheries Service of the Government Subdelegation between 29 and 31 January.
It was a very exhaustive inspection in which personnel from the Government Subdelegation and also inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) arrived from Madrid. The inspection began after the ship arrived at the port of Vigo with an alert issued by an oceanographic observer on the possible presence of shark fins linked to sailors of Indonesian origin present in the crew.
In the review, 65 tons of excess quota of halibut were found. These events led to the lifting of a penalty document for serious infringement of the Maritime Fisheries Law.
The surplus of catches was distributed in the Food Bank of Vigo, which has industrial freezers to be able to store it correctly. In the next few days the other food banks, social dining rooms and charities of both the province of Pontevedra and the rest of Galicia will be distributed, since it is a large amount of fish.
