Ourense, March 8, 2024.- The Subdelegation of the Government in Ourense commemorated today the celebration of the International Day of Working Women with an institutional act open to all the neighbors of Ourense at the entrance of the subdelegation under the motto: "Invest in equality, advance as a society" in order to denounce the social and economic inequalities resulting from the digital gender gap and the male violence that occurs in the digital world. At the event, the manifesto was read by the deputy delegate, head of the Viogen unit, Alida Iglesias.
The deputy delegate, Emilio González, reiterated the commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to real and effective equality between women and men. She emphasized that we are facing the most feminist government in the history of democracy and committed to its actions and demands and reiterates the need to make an appeal to raise awareness among the general public so that both men and women join the feminist struggle. In addition, he said that the Government has taken unprecedented measures in the area of equality, such as the equalization of maternity and paternity leave, progress in wage equality with the increase in the Interprofessional Minimum Wage, which helps to correct the wage gap between men and women, one of the structural inequalities of the labor market.
Added to these measures is the guarantee that domestic workers enjoy the same social protection and working conditions as other workers. Measures that affect the emancipation and freedom of women.
Emilio González recalled that "women are the majority, especially in the sectors that are most invisible to society and in which the burden of work is greatest" to whom he wanted to express his personal and institutional gratitude.
The deputy delegate also reiterated "the commitment of the Government of Spain to real and effective equality between women and men, as well as to the eradication of all forms of discrimination suffered by women, guaranteeing a firm legislative commitment to build an egalitarian world and participatory society."
Tribute to the pioneering women of the province of Ourense
In addition to reading the manifesto, the event included a tribute to 15 pioneering women from the province who were referents in their fields throughout history, carried out by the workers of the subdelegation. These 15 women are:
ANTONIA FERRÍN MOREIRAS
Carballiño 1914 - 2009. Professor of mathematics and first Galician astronomer.
THE TOUZA-DOMÍNGUEZ SISTERS
Dolores, Amparo and Julia were born in Ribadavia in 1890, 1892 and 1901, respectively. Thanks to them, many Jews who arrived by train to the locality, to take refuge in Portugal, escaping from Nazism, were saved. Together they ran the Ribadavia Casino and a kiosk, which allowed him to carry out this secret plot to save hundreds of Jewish lives.
THE MASTERS OF VILAR DE ASTRÉS
Celsa and Eloisa Méndez Vilar, Concepción Docampo Salinas and María Gloria Fernández Melón were among the pioneering teachers of the first half of the 20th century in the province of Ourense.
ASUNCIÓN GONZÁLEZ VÁZQUEZ
Ourense, 1871 189. First documented victim of gender violence in the city. Asunción was in the Praza Maior on April 28 listening to the sermon on Good Friday’s descent with her boyfriend, Juan Xesta, when he was suddenly shot.
ELISA AND MARCELA
Elisa Sánchez and Marcela Gracia were two professors who married in A Coruña at the beginning of the 20th century, becoming the first homosexual marriage in Spain.
EUGENIA PEREIRA RODRIGUEZ
Carballiño 1895 and was the first Galician to obtain a degree in Pharmacy. Against the will of his father, who considered that his daughter should adapt to a woman of the time.
JOSEFINA SALGADO PÉREZ
1946 in Orense. Precursor of women’s sport, specifically athletics.
EMMA GONZALEZ BERMELLO
1931 Orense. She was a Spanish politician and the first woman to become mayor of a Galician city, Vigo in 1978. She was also one of the first three women to enter the first Parliament of Galicia after the dictatorship of Franco.
ADELAIDA PÉREZ PÉREZ
1901 in The Poor of Trives. She was the first woman registered as a pharmacist in the province of Ourense in 1930, with the number 31. He studied in Madrid and had his own pharmacy in Allariz.
MARÍA LÓPEZ DE GUADALUPE
First Ourense to open a pharmacy in the 16th century.
GALICIAN OLGA
Olga Gallego was born in 1923 in Ourense and died in 2010. She was the first woman from Orense to join the Galician Royal Academy.
MARÍA ÁUREA RODRÍGUEZ
He was born in 1897 in Muntián. She was the first gaitera documented in Galicia and directed the group of gaitas Os Maravillas de Cartelle in which she acted together with her brothers.
OLYMPIA OF VALENCIA
She was born in Baltar in 1898 and was the first gynaecologist in Galicia. She is remembered as the first Galician to finish her medical degree.
REBECA LÓPEZ DE TURISO
Rebeca López de Turiso was one of the pioneering women of the theater in Ourense.
MARIA CONSUELO PARIS VILLAR
María Consuelo Paris Villar was born in Santiago in 1911. After finishing his studies at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Santiago in 1933, he opened his own pharmaceutical establishment on Calle do Progreso, Ourensá. At that time the pharmacy had the latest in national and foreign products.
