The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, presided this morning the institutional act of International Women's Day (8M) in the Subdelegation of the Government. The subdelegate, in the presence of institutional representatives, of the State Security Forces and Bodies and of the State agencies in the province, was in charge of inaugurating the act, in which the manifesto of 8M was read by nine students of the IES Sánchez Cantón de Pontevedra.
Losada claimed the work of the “feminist and progressive” government that Pedro Sánchez chairs and joined the campaign of the Ministry of Equality, “Con M de Mujeres. All the Women. Te mueve”, recordando “el camino ya andado” e invitando a seguir avanzando. In her speech, she stressed that feminist policies are not simply “abstractions”, but translate into issues as concrete as the increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), which is reducing the wage gap, such as the Labor Reform, which consolidated the work of the newest women, or the improvement in minimum pensions, which benefited, in a very special way, widowed women. “There is an undeniable relationship between social policies and the advancement of equality and feminism,” she said.
Likewise, Losada encouraged everyone to “plant towards any attempt at regression advances in feminism and in the conquests of recent years.” In this regard, he warned of the importance of continuing to consolidate these achievements and “never take them for granted.” He therefore appealed for interinstitutional collaboration “in a case that must be common and unquestionable.” The deputy delegate also addressed the State Security Forces and Corps to thank them for their work in the fight, in the front line, against gender violence. Finally, he considered 8M a “strategic date” for this progressive government.
The students of the IES Sánchez Cantón, with the coordinator of Equality, Conchi Díaz, at the head was protagonist of the central element of the institutional celebration with the reading of the Manifesto by the 8M. Thus took the word Tala, Cristina, Grieta, Carlota, Ánxela, Manuela, Marta and Paula, students of 2nd ESO, who were in charge of reading the manifesto in Galician and Spanish.
The students claimed the importance of Education as a key tool to advance in equality “and weaken hegemonic masculinities” and confirmed the commitment of the Sánchez Cantón Institute and the Subdelegation of the Government to continue advancing “in the agenda of a feminist Spain, a Galicia and a Pontevedra; of a better Spain, a Galicia and a Pontevedra”.
The event held today in the Subdelegation’s assembly hall culminated a whole week of activities that are being carried out throughout the province to highlight the feminist struggle and that will continue in the coming weeks.
