On March 8, the Government Delegation commemorated International Women’s Day by reading twelve feminist texts and marking, through them, their total commitment to equality in society. The Government delegate, Pedro Blanco; the mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey; the deputy delegate in A Coruña, María Rivas, and the deputy in the Congress, Obdulia Taboadela, as well as nine other women referents in areas such as administration, social organizations or journalism took part in the event.
The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña was in charge of opening the commemoration, with a few words in which she stressed the importance of continuing to work for equality: “Today we bring to our remembrance all the women who, with their struggle and commitment, contributed to this path. But today we also publicly state that we are here, that we are equal, we have the same rights and we want the same opportunities, the same salaries, the same public spaces and the same presence on the boards of directors or in any governing body,” said María Rivas.
Rivas also wanted to highlight the social policies of the Government of Pedro Sánchez in favor of equality: “The Spanish Government is a committed government that places feminism and equality at the heart of all its political action. And that is why we are here today, in the Delegation of the Government of Spain in Galicia, because to bet on equality is to advance as a society”.
The event continued with the reading of twelve feminist texts. The government delegate was the first to speak, reading a fragment of 'How to Educate in Feminism' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The next was the mayor of A Coruña, who made her own with a poem from the book Ruido, by Luisa Villalta. Obdulia Taboadela chose a fragment from Mary Wollstonecraft’s Vindication of Women’s Rights.
They were followed by Eva Vázquez, Deputy Secretary General of the Government Delegation; Manuela Vilaboy, Head of the Violence on Women Unit of the Subdelegation of the Government in A Coruña; Cristina Oliveira, Director of the Health and Social Policy Area of the Government Delegation; Delia Irene Martínez, Secretary General of the Federation of Employees and Employees of the Public Services of UGT Galicia; Ana Quintairos, Director of the Promotion Area of the Coruña
With events like this, the Government Delegation in Galicia continues to bet on an agenda of marked feminist accent that is present throughout the year, maintaining its central axes on March 8 and November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
