The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, highlighted the daily work that takes place in the Social Integration Center (CIS) of Vigo Carmen Avendaño during a visit to this facility, which was accompanied by the director of the Penitentiary Center of the Lama, Teresa Delgado, the deputy director of the CIS, Raquel Casal, and staff of the center.
The visit is part of the events for the 8M, Women's Day, which is being developed by the Subdelegation. Losada gave the center one of the traveling suitcases against gender violence “MAVI”, an initiative of the Violence Unit on Women of this institution. The suitcase, which contains titles of feminist literature with a formative approach, will strengthen the CIS library in the coming months. The books were very well received by the director, who stressed the importance of having specialized degrees in this field.
The subdelegate stressed that suitcases are available to municipalities, non-governmental organizations and also all kinds of centers working in the field of social inclusion. The “MAVI” was already in the prison of A Lama and now returns to the CIS of Vigo “to continue fulfilling the mission for which this program was designed, which is to help build a more egalitarian, fair and free society”. “Every prisoner who wrote any of these books, which are signed by well-known authors, is a step forward in that battle for equality and the eradication of male violence,” he said.
The Carmen Avendaño welcomes in these times 99 inmates in the regime of third degree (semiberdade) fulfilling, therefore, the final part of their sentences. During their stay at the CIS they have the duty to spend the night in the cells and also to participate in the training activities that take place there. Around 3,000 inmates pass through its doors throughout the year for whom reintegration programmes are designed, giving priority to their integration into the labour market.
The prison in Vigo, which has a prison population of 20 people, also houses the Service for the Management of Penalties and Alternative Measures (SGPMA), which is responsible for the coordination and development of the Work for Community Benefit (TBC) programmes and for the suspension and release of sentences, that is, sentences imposed by the judicial authority that do not involve deprivation of liberty. For its part, the CIS maintains agreements with non-governmental organizations and municipalities that are responsible for supervising the work resulting from this type of prison sanctions. About 400 people a year pass through the Service.
