The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, today delivered the traveler’s suitcase against gender violence (“MAVI”) to the City of Pazos de Borbén. This initiative, promoted by the Unit against Violence against Women of the Subdelegation, is part of the program of events organized on the occasion of the next International Women’s Day, 8-M.
The five suitcases that are part of the project and that have already visited twelve municipalities in the province of Pontevedra, as well as the Penitentiary Center of A Lama, are intended to promote equality and raise awareness of the need to continue advancing in the fight against male violence through reading. No act of surrender, which took place in the Subdelegation of the Government, were present the mayor of the town, Luciano Otero, and councilor of Culture and Social Services, Victoria Couñago.
The subdelegate highlighted the municipalist nature of this initiative and the fundamental role played by municipalities in the dissemination of this type of campaigns, especially in rural areas, where access to materials of this nature can be more complicated. “These actions help to build a more egalitarian, just and free society from male violence,” he said.
The suitcase will remain in Pazos de Borbén for three months, after which it will continue its journey through other municipalities, shelters, associations of women victims of gender violence, libraries, women’s information centers or social services of the province that request it. “It’s a trip with no return date,” explained the deputy delegate, “as the project will continue to tour the province and increase the books that travel in these suitcases.”
The travelling suitcase contains almost 30 titles written by women, among which are ‘Men explain things to me’ by Rebecca Solnit and ‘Tired’ by Nuria Varela; as well as books aimed at children, such as ‘I am going with me’ by Raquel Díaz Reguera. It also includes a diary so that readers who wish to do so can reflect their experience through comments or suggestions, with the aim of contributing to enrich this initiative that aims to be dynamic and improve their journey.
Roundabout at the top of the Valleys
On the other hand, Abel Losada and Luciano Otero addressed the claim for improvement of the crossing of the N-550 at the top of the Fences with the provincial roads EP-2702 and EP-2906 coming from Redonda and Peinador. This is a point for which there is already a preliminary draft prepared in 2017 and which, second explained Abel Losada to the mayor, will be promoted to try to include it in the programming of actions of the Ministry of Transport in our province throughout this legislature. Both sides agreed on the need to improve the intersection due to the significant traffic of light and heavy vehicles existing.
The deputy delegate also received information from the mayor about the periodic rallies that are taking place by the neighborhood platform on the provincial highway EP-2702, owned by the Provincial Council. The mayor stressed that there was a commitment to integral paving by the former provincial government and the former Infrastructure Deputy, Gregorio Agís, who was postponed following the municipal elections and the change of government in the provincial body. Abel Losada explained that the Subdelegation respects the right of demonstration of the neighborhood and asked that, as so far, the concentrations continue to run through peaceful channels and affect traffic as little as possible and comply with the requirement of prior communication.
