The Subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, inaugurated today the conference on the “Legal framework applicable to foreign women victims of gender violence”, which was held at the headquarters of the Government Delegation, and in which 58 professionals, representatives of institutions and of the State Security Forces and Corps participated.
During her speech María Rivas stressed that “if we look at the figures of foreign women victims of gender violence, we have assets in VioGén a total of 558 cases that are conditioning the lives of 546 women, and probably many of them with daughters and sons in their care. Therefore, one in four women who today, in the province of A Coruña, need some kind of protection through the VioGén system, are foreign women.”
These data are part of the 2,192 active cases in VioGén in the province of A Coruña, with 2,118 victims and 2,123 aggressors. The deputy delegate recalled that there are “2,118 very powerful reasons for us to work every day to support, help, protect and procure all that a Rule of Law, which a modern society such as ours, owes to any of its citizens: security, health, work, housing, dignity, recognition...”
The subdelegate also wanted to emphasize the residence and work authorizations granted to foreign women victims of gender violence, indicating that their growth is continuous since 2006 and that “these figures also indicate that one of every three authorizations of the total, 915 that were granted in Galicia, were resolved in this province: a total of 398.”
However, he wanted to emphasize that “when we talk about helping women victims of male violence, you can never be complacent with the work done, because there is always much more to do”, even so he recalled that of the 188 authorizations granted throughout Galicia in 2023, almost half, 91 were in the province of A Coruña.
María Rivas wanted to invite us to work together to protect these women, remembering that it is “crucial to recognize and make visible their special vulnerability and work together from all levels of administration, to protect them regardless of their origin or migratory status, but without ceasing to recognize that this status entails greater difficulties.”
Finally, the Deputy Delegate thanked the councillors and those responsible for the social services of the different municipalities; the staff of the women’s information centers; the members of the State Security Forces and Corps; and the directors and directors of the various areas of the Delegation and the Government Subdelegation.
The activity was coordinated by the Head of the Gender Violence Unit of the Government Delegation, and by the Head of the Subdelegation Unit. The main narrative was in charge of the head of the Office of Foreigners of the Government Subdelegation in A Coruña, Julio A. Simon White.
