The subdelegate of the government, María Rivas, participated this morning in the act of taking possession of the commander of the Air Surveillance Squadron number 10, Javier Marcos Barreiro.
María Rivas wanted to highlight the strategic importance of these facilities both for national defense and for the control of air traffic, both military and civilian, but they are responsible for the detection, identification and monitoring of aircraft in our airspace.
The event took place at the Barbanza Aerial Quartering located on Mount Iroite of Noia City Hall. In her course, the outgoing captain Seila García, with more than 18 years of service in the quartering, gave the relief and welcomed the commander, all in an act presided over by the Head of the Surveillance and Control System of the Air Combat Command and which ended with a tribute to those who gave their lives for Spain.
The new commander, Javier Marcos Barreiro, who was director of the Toledo Infantry Academy for 3 years, joins EVA 10 after a mission in Somalia.
The EVA 10 is the only one installed in Galicia of the 13 squads provided by the Spanish Air Force throughout the territory of Spain. These squadrons are the air units responsible for the collection, processing and transmission of radar data for subsequent exploitation by the Command and Control Groups, to make possible the fulfillment of the mission assigned to the Command and Air Control System.
These facilities, created in the early 1980s, came into operation on December 1, 1984, and since their creation it has also carried out various operational missions, radar aids to navigation, among which stands out the support to the SAR during the storms in the area, participating in defense exercises, and collaborating with official bodies such as the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center of Fisterra, the National Institute of Meteorology and the University of Santiago de Compostela.
