The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, held today a meeting with the Cofradía de Pescadores de A Coruña to discuss the issues related to the compensation to the shellfish farmers affected by the dredging of the Ría del Burgo.
The deputy delegate of the Government, who was accompanied at the meeting by the Head of Coastal Demarcation, Carlos Gil Villar, wanted to convey to the representatives of the sector the commitment of Miteco with this project of regeneration of the Burgo estuary, and that from the first moment took into account the affectation of the shellfish work and thus made the provision of compensation for the people affected.
In this regard, the subdelegate informed them that once the deadline for the extension of the works has been approved, the compensation for the loss of activity to the sector will be automatically extended until that new completion date, so that the shellfish farmers and shellfish farmers affected will continue to receive the corresponding aid, as has been the case so far.
María Rivas, recalled that at all times she was in contact and attending to the requests of the sector, as evidenced by the fact that in the processing of the extension of the execution period it had already been accompanied by the extension of the compensation for loss or loss of the shellfish activity. The compensation to the shellfish sector for the loss of its activity amounts to 3.6 million euros.
The regeneration work of the Ria del Burgo, will mean an improvement in the production of seafood in the area. The dredging of the Ria del Burgo is a unique work of reference that constitutes the largest project of decontamination of a coastal strip, addressed through the Recovery Funds.
The work, begun in December 2021, is scheduled to be completed in April of this year. During all its phases of execution, it met the demands and needs of the shellfish sector.
The sector’s demands were particularly focused on compensations for those affected by the loss of the activity, but also, for example, on the establishment of the best time for the reintroduction of seafood species with the aim of enabling it to have greater chances of success; or with the determination of the varieties of bivalves to be introduced in the new shellfish areas: the Babous Clam, the Fine Clam, the Japonic and the Berber.
The Government’s deputy delegate once again conveyed to them the Government’s commitment to always be in the search for the best solution for the sector, especially in this final phase where more than 90% of the planned actions are already executed.
The subdelegate of the Government collected the demands of the marshals and marshals of the Brotherhood and undertook to transfer them to the Ministry. In this regard, it also took the opportunity to ask the competent administration of the seafood sector, the Xunta de Galicia, to be involved in the search for solutions from the end of the regeneration work next April.
