The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, called today in Vigo for a meeting and concord, consensus and dialogue on the anniversary of a Constitution “with which the government will continue to work hand in hand for the best possible future”. “We talk about a text that is a safe conduct that guarantees our future and that will lead us to the future of progress and well-being that we yearn for; a safe conduct that gives us peace of mind today to conquer tomorrow successfully,” said the delegate during the commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the Magna Carta, held at the MARCO museum in Vigo.
Pedro Blanco pointed out that the event, in which the mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, with whom he presided, also participated; the subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra in office, Isabel Alonso; the subdelegates in A Coruña and Lugo, María Rivas and Isabel Rodríguez, and members of the Viguesa municipal corporation, “help us to reflect on what has been done in these 45 years of democracy and to value the rights achieved: those who talk about health, education, housing… but also those who talk about equality, diversity and integration.” Those rights, he said, “are the bases on which we will continue to build Spain of all, the Galicia of all.” “We will continue to expand constitutional rights to make a Spain and a Galicia more respectful of its environment, more cultured, more modern, of more progress and well-being to make among all and everyone a freer, egalitarian, democratic and supportive society,” the delegate added.
In his speech, Pedro Blanco reiterated the “profoundly democratic and constitutionalist” nature of the Government, supported by a party that, like others, was protagonist in the drafting, approval and development of the Constitution and promoter of rights and the great social achievements that have defined our country. “For this very reason, we are the first to defend the text, its articulation, every word and line that makes it up, from the preamble to the end of the final provision,” he said. In this regard, he said he did not share or understand “the catastrophic warnings that some make about the future” and again appealed to the spirit of concord and consensus that governed the wording of the text 45 years ago. “A spirit that is good to recover and strengthen in these times, because only through concord and consensus can we move forward, always with the Magna Carta, because it is a tool that we have given ourselves, not an arrogant weapon. That’s why it would be good to read it, teach it and, of course, fulfill it,” he said.
Itinerant celebration
For the second year, the Government Delegation commemorates the Day of the Constitution outside its headquarters (the previous one was held in the Concello de A Coruña) in the spirit of making everyone participate in this important celebration. It is an initiative that the Delegation wants to convert into tradition to continue carrying the celebration throughout all the cities and towns of Galicia.
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Vigo (MARCO) was the venue chosen for this year’s event, a space dedicated to culture that was previously a prison and also a beacon of justice and that, according to the delegate, “reflects the evolution of our society by the Magna Carta, by the hand of political parties, governments, citizens who left aside the disputes to highlight the agreements, which left aside what separated them and emphasized that united them”.
Regarding the election of Vigo, Pedro Blanco said that “it is a pride and satisfaction to celebrate this anniversary in a living and modern city, as is our Constitution; a living and modern text that responds with security and solvency to the challenges that our society exposes to it”, he concluded.
