The Government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, announced today that the program of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma) ‘Verano Joven’ facilitated that more than 108,000 young people and girls between 18 and 30 years old make about 315,000 trips to or from Galicia this summer thanks to discounts for travel of up to 90% on bus and train tickets approved by the Government.
Specifically, the delegate pointed out that 72% of the journeys made between June 15 and August 15 with origin or destination Galicia were made by rail (226,889) and the rest by road (88,317). Among the most demanded routes, he said, those that link Galicia with Madrid, Castilla and León and internal travel within the community stand out. In fact, the routes within Galicia represent 57.5% of the total registered trips (181,147) and, taking into account all those made at the state level, 4%, a figure only surpassed by Andalusia (7.5%). The trips between Madrid and Galicia are 27.2% of all trips (85,821) and Castilla y León, 6.4% (20,033).
By province, A Coruña was the main origin and/or destination of the trips made with the discounts of the program ‘Verano Joven’, with 66% of the trips registered by train and bus between June 15 and September 15 of this year. A Coruña and Pontevedra accounted for 89.3% of train journeys (202,611), while Lugo and A Coruña accounted for 82.5% of road journeys (72,819).
In Spain as a whole, the ‘Young Summer’ programme facilitated 2.6 million trips, benefiting around 950,000 young people and girls between the ages of 18 and 30. At this point, Pedro Blanco highlighted the 15,500 Interrail Passes throughout the country to travel throughout Europe, which means almost reaching in just two months the 17,600 passes that were sold in Spain 2022, both through Renfe and the web Interrail.eu, without distinction of age. “These data reflect the good acceptance of the Government’s initiative among youth and its contribution to promoting the use of collective public transport to discover our country, a more efficient and sustainable way,” he concluded.
