On August 17, the deadline for companies that are interested in the rehabilitation works of the mareographer of A Coruña to present their offers ends. For this reason and to draw attention to the patrimonial value of the building, the subdelegate of the Government, María Rivas, approached the pier of Calvo Sotelo, accompanied by the director of the National Geographic Institute, Pablo Carballo.
The subdelegate wanted to highlight the importance of these works because despite the maintenance and care of the building that has been carried out over the years “a rehabilitation of these characteristics was never undertaken, and therefore we believe that this marks a milestone in the future of the mareographer”.
Part of the National Geographic Institute, this mareograph measures the sea level and provides data to researchers in the fields of geodesy, oceanography and climate change. In this regard, María Rivas stressed its importance since “it is key to anticipate what is going to happen in the future and to measure how it is affecting climate change on our coasts and for that reason the Government also wants improvements in the infrastructures in which they are located”.
The building has inside it a tidal measuring device and a Xeodesic station that are part of the national geographic reference equipment. It is integrated into different national and international networks dedicated to the control of dynamic processes, coastal and climate change. The scientific and technical work carried out in the facilities, built in 1948, has been uninterrupted since its inception in 1955.
The building is part of the first mareographers built in Spain, next to that of Alicante, and is currently protected by its patrimonial value. María Rivas also stressed the importance of the works that will be carried out in the building to offer activities of an informative nature for citizens “which also supposes an opportunity to know another element of the General Administration of the State that is working for its future and its quality of life and that is often unknown”.
A Coruña is one of the 10 operational mareographs in Spain and the only one on the Atlantic peninsular coast. As for the deadline for the execution of the works, they will be three months, so it is expected that they will end before the end of the year.
Features of the work
The rehabilitation project includes interventions such as:
-Works to stabilize the building and waterproofing and adaptation of interiors
-Adaptation of the building to other uses complementary to the geodetic activities of the mareographer related to informative activities of the National Geographic Information Center
-Execution of an independent pillar for performing gravimetric measurements inside the building .
