The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, asked for prudence and responsibility at the wheel in the special operation First of August, which began last Friday, July 28 and ends on Tuesday, August 1 at 24:00.
María Rivas approached the Traffic Management Center, where she supervised the development of this operation in which more than 200 agents are deployed throughout the province and in which 285,250 are planned on the roads of Cordoba, 25% of the total of Galicia that today will reach 878,000.
The subdelegate stressed the need to extreme driving precautions in a month that records the highest volume of road trips of the entire year. He also reported that so far this year on the roads of the province a total of 15 fatal accidents were recorded with 15 deceased victims, six less than in the same period of time of 2022.
María Rivas reiterated that each of these victims represents a failure and “therefore the Government spares no effort to combat this deadly accident, with surveillance and prevention campaigns that it develops throughout the year.”
In this regard, the subdelegate recalled the different campaigns developed throughout the year from the DGT to raise awareness of the use of reflective materials to vulnerable users, the obligation to wear the safety belt and the need for good maintenance of both private vehicles and collective or commercial transport.
As the deputy delegate said, during the weekend there was the greatest intensity of travel although it is true that both for the afternoon of this Monday and for Tuesday, August 1, a high volume of traffic is expected again on the main roads of the province. The largest influx of vehicles will take place today between 18.00 and 23.00h, where the main difficulty will be at the entrance and exit of the large urban centers.
Also for tomorrow, August 1 is expected a great intensity in the circulation in the direction of departure and entry of the large urban centers by the beginning of the tourist season in hotels and second residences. The most conflicting hours will occur between 8 am and 6 pm, so, as far as possible, it is advisable to avoid that time slot.
The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña highlighted the availability of means from the General Directorate of Traffic, with the deployment of agents on the roads, personnel of the Management Centers responsible for the maintenance of equipment and the installation of measures on the roads. María Rivas thanked the effort and work that all the DGT teams do “in order to guarantee safety and optimize the roads”.
For this operation throughout Galicia, 340 surveillance cameras and 409 data collection stations are active, sensors that, among other things, measure the distances between vehicles and the occupation of the road. In addition, 523 variable message boards are also in operation that broadcast real-time messages on roadblocks, show recommendations and other aspects to take into account for safe driving.
María Rivas recalled that the AP9, the A6 and the N-550 are the roads that record during these days a greater volume of traffic.
In the presentation the subdelegate was accompanied by the director of the Northwest Traffic Management Center, Ramiro Martínez, by the Provincial Traffic Chief, Victoria Gómez and by the head of the Traffic Subsector of A Coruña, the captain of the Civil Guard, Miguel Soldán.
