Isabel Rodríguez supervises the distribution of 113 tons of food in the province of Lugo to serve the more than 8,500 people in vulnerable situations
The subdelegate of the Government in Lugo, Isabel Rodríguez, supervised today in the warehouse of the Food Bank of Lugo the progress of the first phase of the 2023 Program of Food Aid to the most disadvantaged people, managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The visit was accompanied by the president of the Food Bank of Lugo, Amadora Núñez; and the head of the Agriculture Service of the Subdelegation in the province, Enrique Fernández.
Isabel Rodríguez said that in this first stage of the plan, a total of 113,210 kilos of food products are distributed by the Government to vulnerable people in the province of Lugo, with an economic value amounting to 187,327 euros, covering the most basic needs of 8,500 people.
During the visit to the facilities of the Food Bank a subdelegada thanked the unpayable work that the workers and volunteers of the collective carry out on a daily basis to meet the demands of Lucan families, as well as the collaboration of the more than 5,300 partner organizations that make the distribution to the final recipients throughout Spain. In the autonomous community, more than 693 tons of food worth 1.14 million euros will be allocated free of charge.
The 2023 programme will be developed in two phases. In the first phase, which begins today, foods of basic character will be distributed, varied, nutritious, little perishable, easy to transport and storage. The purchased food basket includes rice, cooked beans, canned tuna, spaghetti and noodle pasta, fried tomato, biscuits, vegetable sour, soluble cocoa and children’s fruit and chicken jars.
The subdelegate explained that the products will be distributed through the Food Bank, as well as the provincial centers of the Spanish Red Cross. These entities will distribute the food among the other organizations, until reaching 68 in the province of Lugo.
Helping the most disadvantaged people
The 2023 Food Aid Programme is a national initiative launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food that brings food closer to the most disadvantaged people, co-financed by the European Fund for the Most Disadvantaged (FEAD) (2014-2020).
This plan includes the purchase of food purchased from the purchaser, its supply to the storage and distribution centres of the distribution partner organizations, who distribute it among the authorized distribution partner organizations so that, in turn, it can be delivered free of charge to the most disadvantaged people. In addition, this program includes accompanying measures, understood as a set of actions aimed at promoting the social inclusion of people with greater needs to receive food aid.
