Ourense, April 25, 2023.- The Government’s Deputy Delegate in Ourense, Emilio González, visited the 2nd ESO students of the CEIP María Inmaculada de Verín, who last Thursday received the Ponle Barrera Award in the Junior category for being the first centre to give a 100% focused subject to Road Safety.
In his visit to the school, Emilio González highlighted the "commitment and involvement of the center to promote road safety in the educational field of minors who travel daily to their school", as well as the "protection of the environment in a municipality of 13,625 inhabitants" and encouraged the other centers of the province to join this issue.
During the visit, the Deputy Delegate of the Government was accompanied by the Mayor of Verín, Gerardo Seoane, the Councilor for Traffic, Citizen Security and Civil Protection, Cándida Couñago; as well as the Provincial Director of the DGT, David Llorente and the Deputy Provincial Director of Traffic, Andrea Conde in an act led by the director of the school, Gerarda Fidalgo.
Last Thursday the 20th, the president of the SENATE, Ander Gil, presented the Ponle Frenchwoman Award to the director of the center for the 45 students who study 2nd year of ESO at the María Inmaculada school in Verín (Ourense). The students took the subject called “Sustainable and Safe School Mobility”, becoming the only ones in all of Spain to have a subject focused 100% on road safety. This school year (2022/2023) is the fifth in which the students carry out this subject that began as a transversal subject and currently reaches 45 students of 2nd ESO of the center.
Lei LOMLOE
The new Law No. 340, of December 30, 2020, known as LOMLOE allows schools with secondary school obrigations to program a subject of “free programming”.
Thanks to the subject, students learn how to move safely and more sustainably, not only to the school, but in their daily lives. The teaching method focuses on more interactive learning. Through games, workshops and talks given by the staff of the DGT and the Civil Traffic Guard Detachment on topics such as first aid or drugs and alcohol, among others, they achieve greater commitment and awareness on the part of underage students in terms of road safety and the environment.
European Project STARS
This initiative is part of the European STARS Project (Accreditation and Recognition of Sustainable Travel for Schools) of the DGT, and aims to encourage schools to promote sustainable and active breakdowns, both by walking and cycling.
