The deputy delegate of the Government, María Rivas, participated in the inauguration of the Festival of Lace of Camariñas that this year reaches its thirtieth edition, highlighting the revitalization that the exhibition is experiencing consolidating itself as a reference and an inescapable date both for the Costa da Morte and for the whole of Galicia.
María Rivas highlighted the “fighting and strong” spirit of the Costa da Morte “accustomed to overcoming the most critical moments” and that thanks to its close link with the sea “made you stronger and forged a spirit open to new cultures” added the subdelegate.
In her speech, María Rivas recalled the first palilleras of the sixteenth century and their struggle for sustenance, highlighting how, seven centuries later, today’s palilleiras continue to defend tradition and ensure the maintenance of the profession, “a work that above other considerations defends and exalts our cultural identity and is the result of the creativity and imagination of the palilleiras, of all of you”.
The subdelegate did not want to overlook that in addition to a date with tradition, Camariñas also represents a date with fashion and art “because palilleiras are the best example of what an artist is” she said.
María Rivas highlighted the value of each lace and each piece that “is unique and unrepeatable”. He also recalled the capacity of delivery of the palilleras to whom he recognized the struggle “for the dignity and culture of our land”, putting in value the traditions and identity.
The subdelegate stressed that beyond tradition and culture, the lace represents “economy, employment and wealth generation” and recalled that this was also the case from its origins when exports were “the main barn of the economy of the area.” In this sense, the subdelegate stressed that the only Spanish merchandise that sank in the Titanic was precisely a box of lace from Camariñas that went to the Anxeles.
María Rivas insisted on the value of the Lace Exhibition as a tourist attraction and pole of attraction and reference for the whole region.
The inaugural day was also attended by the president of the County Council of A Coruña, Valentín González Formoso; the mayor of Camariñas, Sandra Insua and the territorial delegate of the Xunta, Gonzalo Trenor.
