This afternoon at 3 p.m., the Special Holy Week Traffic Operation begins, which ends on Monday, April 10, at 4 p.m. According to the data provided by the General Directorate of Traffic, a total of 1,792,000 trips are planned throughout Galicia.
The expected displacement by province is 538,000 in A Coruña; 582,000 in Pontevedra; 291,000 in Lugo and 381,000 in Ourense. These total forecasts are not included on April 3 and 4, as clarified by the Government’s sub-delegate in A Coruña, María Rivas.
This special traffic operation will take place in two phases, the first that begins today and ends this Sunday, April 2, and a second, “more important than the previous phase by volume and movement of vehicles that starts on Wednesday, April 5 and ends on Monday, April 10,” according to the subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña.
In the Galician roads as a whole, as María Rivas advances, 501,000 displacements are expected, while from April 5 to 10 the estimated displacement data are 1,053,000. In this regard, the deputy delegate has highlighted the Government’s effort to ensure safety on the roads of our community where there will be a device of approximately 1,000 agents.
In the province of A Coruña, 159,000 trips are planned this weekend, while in the second phase from April 5 to 10, 316,000 are planned.
In Pontevedra, during the first phase 171,000 trips are planned and in the second phase, 342,000 trips are planned.
For this weekend, in Lugo, 76,000 trips and 171,000 trips are planned from April 5 to 10.
In Ourense, it is planned to move 95,000 vehicles during the first phase and 224,000 during the second phase
María Rivas stressed that “these are the most conflictive dates of the year since there are many trips in a short space of time with similar origins and destinations and made in the same days and hours”. In this sense she has called for prudence and not to incur practices or habits that put driving ability at risk.
Regarding the accident data, María Rivas has assured, that the figures are intolerable. Although with respect to last year, the number of victims has been reduced by three, in the Galician roads during these months 18 people have lost their lives, three less than the previous year, “a fact that we cannot afford”, said the subdelegate. On the roads of A Coruña there have been 6 fatalities, 5 less than the previous year, “we will continue working until these figures are zero”, added María Rivas. The continuous improvement in road safety, both through investments and awareness campaigns, is a priority for this Government.
