Ourense, March 14, 2023.- The subdelegate of the Government in Ourense, Emilio González, presided this morning the ceremony of awarding diplomas to eight volunteer radio amateurs of the National Emergency Radio Network (REMER) in the province in recognition of their long work and their selfless collaboration with this Civil Protection network. The deputy delegate of the Government wanted to highlight "the generous and altruistic vocation of public service" of the nine radio amateurs honored, by voluntarily putting their time and their own teams at the service of citizen security. He also stressed “the indispensable contribution of REMER’s collaborators to the operation of Civil Protection in case of emergencies”. Emilio González pointed out that "the continuous preparation and perfect organization of the National Emergency Radio Network makes it an extremely effective instrument at the service of the emergency management bodies, as it has been demonstrated on each occasion that its members are required for this".
NATIONAL EMERGENCY RADIO NETWORK
The National Emergency Radio Network (REMER) is an alternative state-wide network complementary to other communications networks used by the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of the Interior. At the provincial level, it depends on the respective delegates and subdelegates of the Government in the different Autonomous Communities and provinces. Its fundamental task is to provide Civil Protection with a communications network that ensures transmissions between the different services involved in the incidents and provides complete and timely information on the circumstances and evolution of the incidents. This network is particularly important when terrestrial infrastructures and facilities are vulnerable to certain special emergency or disaster situations; when telecommunications are not available, damaged, congested or overwhelmed; or when there is a lack of coverage in emergency areas of remote locations. The network is made up of radio amateurs accredited for this purpose who voluntarily join the structure to collaborate in emergency situations. Currently, REMER has around 7,000 employees in Spain. In the province of Ourense, 57 of them provide this service and the network is structured in eight working areas, which cover the entire territory.
