The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Maica Larriba, presided this morning the institutional act of March 8, International Women’s Day, in the Subdelegation of the Government. The event was attended by representatives of the central administration, state security forces and bodies, as well as members of the municipal government of Pontevedra and provincial associations. Maica Larriba was in charge of closing the act of reading the institutional declaration of the Government. The institutional manifesto was read by the Fisheries Inspector of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Irene Fariña.
The deputy delegate of the Government explained that with her figure it is intended to “make visible women in the world of fishing, a fundamental sector for the province and very masculinized”, and above all, to show that “any work activity can be faced by half of the female population”. In this regard, Maica Larriba stressed that, although fishing is still a labor area where there is much to do in terms of equality, “we also have examples of certain changes, such as what means that half of the Fisheries Inspection staff that depends on this Subdelegation are women.”
The deputy delegate explained that, however, “the glass ceiling continues to exist in a sector where more than 12,000 women work, but in which they have scarcely any managerial representation from their governing bodies.” Data, insisted Maica Larriba, which serves to “continue raising the voice before those who deny inequality, an issue not only of women, but that affects the whole society.”
Government progress
During her speech, Larriba also reviewed those measures promoted by the Government of Pedro Sánchez in favor of women. In this regard, the subdelegate recalled the ratification of Convention 189, which improves the conditions of domestic workers; labour reform and the increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage, which benefits women in particular and which allows progress to be made in equal pay; the transfer of 190 million euros to the autonomous communities to implement co-responsibility measures; and the different regulations that advance in equal work and pay. “In short, this is the most feminist government in the history of this country and the government that guarantees equal opportunities between men and women,” said the deputy delegate.
Working Equality Day
Within the framework of this commemoration, on Friday, March 10, the Subdelegation of the Government in Pontevedra will host a training day focused on the actions of the Labor Inspection in favor of labor equality and taught by Mónica González Otero, Inspector of Labor and Social Security in Pontevedra.
