The Government delegate in Galicia, José Miñones, reaffirmed today in Santiago the Government's impulse to sustainable tourism in Galicia, with the contribution of one and a half million euros from the Ministry of Industry for the development of the Tourist Sustainability Plan in Destination (PSTD) Via Verde Compostela-Tambre-Tabs, promoted by the County Council of A Coruña and financed by the Government's Recovery Plan with 1,375,400 euros. In total, Santiago currently benefits from two sustainability plans amounting to about 2.7 million euros. José Miñones also valued that this path will connect with the Oroso–Cerceda section, which was inaugurated last September.
The delegate participated in the presentation of the plan in the Pazo de Raxoi, together with the president of the Diputación, Valentín González Formoso, and the mayor of Santiago, Xosé Sánchez Bugallo, to whom he thanked his contribution to territorial cohesion and the transformation of tourism in Galicia under the umbrella of sustainability. “The Government’s Recovery Plan comes to Santiago and its surroundings and represents a unique opportunity to transform tourism in our community and project it into the future, with a green, sustainable, digital and competitive model,” said the delegate. The event was also attended by the mayors of Tordoia, Antonio Pereiro; Oroso, Luis Rey; Cerceda, Juan Manuel Rodríguez; and Ordes, José Luis Martínez Sanjurjo.
The tourism sustainability plan of the Via Verde Compostela-Tambre-Tabs, of the County Council of A Coruña, is one of the 16 that was selected by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism to finance in Galicia under the extraordinary call for Tourist Sustainability Plans in Destination 2022, which is part of the Government Recovery Plan. The final list of projects was approved in December by the Tourism Sector Conference. In this call, Galicia receives 34,575,400 euros for the development of the approved projects, which benefit about one hundred municipalities in the four provinces.
The City of Santiago benefits directly from two of these plans: The PSTD Via Verde Compostela-Tambre-Tabs (1,375,400 euros) and the Wine and Wine Tourism Plan “Terras de Santiago”, promoted by the GDR Terras de Compostela (1,300,000 euros). These two projects boost tourism in Santiago and its surroundings with an investment close to 2.7 million euros from the Government.
The delegate noted that “the commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez to tourism in Galicia is historic, with some 200 million euros invested from 2020 to this 2023”. This investment goes directly to one of every two municipalities in Galicia. “There is no region in Galicia that does not benefit from the government’s investment to modernize tourism,” he said.
New call open until March 6
In addition, José Miñones pointed out that the new call for Tourism Sustainability Plans is now open and encouraged all local entities in Galicia to present their projects until March 6 through the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism. For this 2023 Galicia will receive 21 million euros to finance new tourism sustainability plans.
José Miñones stressed that with these investments the Government seeks to promote greener tourism and more efficient mobility. This year, the plans focus on wine tourism. The Destination Tourism Sustainability Plans, the delegate said, “represent the best example of collaboration between administrations in benefit of the competitiveness and quality of all our tourist destinations.” “We are designing the tourism of the future of Galicia and we are doing it together with the municipalities. To make our land a sustainable, competitive and quality destination of the first level”.
The Vía Verde Compostela-Tambre-Tablelle Tourism Sustainability Plan
The PSTD Vía Verde Compostela-Tambre-Tabs is promoted by the County Council of A Coruña and was approved by the Government at the Tourism Sector Conference on December 14, within the II extraordinary call for the program of Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destinations, which is financed entirely with the funds of the Recovery Plan. The total amount of the subsidy received by the Diputación de A Coruña is 1,375,400 euros, which is 100% of the project presented.
The general objective of this Plan is to create a unique tourist product based on the gastronomy and other material and intangible resources of the area. To this end, it provides for the revitalization of the rural territory along the route of the Via Verde Compostela-Tambre-Tablelle, through the generation of opportunities linked to sustainable tourism and the valorisation of local products. This plan aims to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the structuring of the territory through this route, integrated in the Greenways product, for the use and enhancement of the natural, patrimonial and gastronomic resources of the municipalities through which it runs, and thereby maximize its tourist and socio-economic development with a solid and participative strategy.
