The Government’s deputy delegate in Pontevedra, Maica Larriba, presided this morning over the minute of silence called at the doors of the Government’s Subdelegation in memory of the latest victim of male violence, Beatriz Lijó Gesteira, murdered by her exparella in the town of Baiona and officially recognized as a victim of gender violence. The subdelegate announced that Beatriz Lijó became the 8th victim of gender violence this year 2023 throughout the national territory, and the first Galician victim so far this year. Since 2003, when data collection began, there are already 1,190 women killed by gender violence.
Maica Larriba expressed her shock at this murder and lamented that “once again male violence ends the life of a woman.” Larriba also wanted to transfer all her support to family and friends, especially her two minor children, who were direct victims of this tragedy. So far this year, the number of children orphaned by gender violence has risen to 13, and 390 since 2013.
The subdelegate recalled that male violence “is a social problem of which we are all co-responsible” and asked institutions, administrations and the whole society to continue fighting to prevent new deaths like this. In this sense, he wanted to remind all the women of the province that “they are not alone, since all the women and all the good men are with them” and encouraged all the women to denounce any situation of male violence.
Likewise, Maica Larriba recalled that the Ministry of Equality, through the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, has the disposition of the citizens the telephone 016, the online consultations through the email 016-online@igualdad.gob.es and the WhatsApp channel on the number 600 000 016, which works 24 hours a day, every day of the week. At 016 you can ask for advice on the resources available and the rights of victims of gender-based violence, as well as legal advice from 8 to 22 hours every day of the week, with attention in 52 languages and an adapted service for possible disability situations.
On the other hand, he also reported that in an emergency situation you can call 112 or the emergency telephones of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). In case it is not possible to make a call and in a situation of danger, you can use the ALERTCOPS application, from which an alert signal will be sent to the police with geolocation. These means of assistance can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows or suspects a case of gender violence. “It is a duty of the whole society to confront this scourge,” he recalled.
To date, in the province of Pontevedra there are 1,367 active cases in the Gender Violence Monitoring System, of which 1 is classified as extreme risk and 26 as high risk.
