The Secretary of State for Telecommunications, María González Veracruz, and the government delegate in Galicia, José Miñones, held a meeting this afternoon with the president of the Provincial Council of Pontevedra and with more than half a hundred mayors, mayors and other municipal offices of municipalities of the province to present the plans of the Government of fiber optic extension in the territory. In the meeting, which was also attended by the subdelegate in Pontevedra, Maica Larriba, the impact of the investments in digitalization that the Government is executing through the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, in these municipalities was announced.
This action is part of the UNICO-Broadband Program, within the Government’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and will allow 40,289 households and companies in the province to connect to high-speed internet in the first two calls (2021 and 2022) with a global investment of 16,166,245 euros, of which the Government contributes 11,116,777 euros. In the whole of Galicia, between the two calls already resolved, the Program of Universalization of Digital Infrastructures for the Single-Broadband Cohesion is bringing the high-speed internet connection to 226,725 homes and companies with a global investment of 107,136,930 euros, of which the Government contributes 71,262,165 euros.
UNICO-Banda Ancha aims to provide a coverage rate of very high capacities to 100% of the Spanish population in 2025. Once the beneficiary projects already in place are implemented, the coverage rate will reach 95%.
So far, two calls for this program have been launched (in 2021 and 2022). The one in 2021 was awarded entirely by Telefónica in Galicia. From 2022, to the companies Vento Rede (for the province of A Coruña), Adamo Telecom (for the province of Lugo) and Avatel Telecom (for the provinces of Ourense and Pontevedra).
Since 2018, the government has mobilized more than 1.5 billion euros of public-private investment to bring ultra-fast broadband connections to more than four million homes and businesses. In the case of Galicia, as in most of the state territory, the households and companies benefited are in ‘white zones’, those that do not have coverage of speed networks of at least 30 Mbps, nor plans for their endowment in the next three years.
Connectivity is a basic element to ensure the survival of small municipalities; it is a weapon against depopulation. Therefore, the Government of Pedro Sánchez is taking the step to guarantee 100% coverage of high-speed internet access throughout the Galician territory, favoring connectivity to more than 300 Mbps in those areas that do not currently have this type of coverage, essential in the current world.
