The government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, visited today the new electrical substation that Red Eléctrica has executed in Quintana de la Serena. An infrastructure that is key to the development of future rail corridors projected in the community, which will connect Mérida with Puertollano and Castilla-La Mancha, and which have been historically demanded in the region of Extremadura.
During his visit, Quintana highlighted the importance of this project, which will allow the electrification of the conventional line and provide better rail services for both passenger and freight transport. “This investment is very significant for the development of the territory, and as support for our business sector. The electrification of this line will mean being able to take our products from Extremadura, to the Levante and the ports of southern Spain, with a lower cost for our companies”, said the delegate.
The La Serena substation is part of a larger project that includes the construction of four electrical substations in this corridor, two in the province of Badajoz and two in Ciudad Real. Once the electrification of the line is completed, freight trains will be able to run at speeds of up to 100 km/h, while passenger trains will reach 200 km/h. The total investment of the Government of Spain in this project exceeds 460 million euros, which reflects the commitment of the Government with the improvement of the railway infrastructure in Extremadura. “This advance will not only benefit the citizens of our community, but will also enhance the connection of Extremadura with the Levante and southern Andalusia,” said Quintana. With this new substation, a significant step is taken towards the modernization of transport in the region, facilitating economic development and the mobility of citizens.
More than 200 million REE investment in Extremadura
The La Serena 400 kV substation is an essential infrastructure to give viability to the development of the new railway corridors planned in Extremadura. Its implementation will provide electricity to the axes that link Mérida with Puertollano and Castilla La Mancha, contributing to the electrification of transport, its decarbonization, and continue advancing in the ecological transition of our country.
Red Eléctrica has invested 11 million euros in the new substation and the line that connects it with the system and the works of execution have been extended throughout the year 2024. During his visit, the government delegate was accompanied by the mayor of Quintana de la Serena, Raimundo Dávila, and Patricia Crego, Regional Delegate Central-West of Redeia, who said that “with the new substation of La Serena, Red Eléctrica contributes to respond to a historical demand of Extremadura society. A project that, together with the other investments, which bring more than 200 million euros until 2026, will serve to continue improving the life of the citizens; boost the economy, industry and employment; and advance in the decarbonization of the system in a region of very high natural value. Our commitment to Extremadura is unquestionable and materializes in developments like this.”
