The government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana, accompanied by the president of the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation, Samuel Moraleda Ludeña, visited this morning the sanitation and purification works of the Don Benito Villanueva de la Serena Wastewater Station (Badajoz).
The action was declared of general interest by Law 26/2009 of General State Budgets for 2010 and is included in the Program of Measures of the Hydrological Plan of the Hydrographic Demarcation of Guadiana (2015-2021).
During his visit, Quintana highlighted the commitment of the Government of Spain with Extremadura with projects such as this new WWTP, with an investment of more than 65 million euros, which will help to highlight the importance of the integrated management of this resource to guarantee environmental sustainability and the protection of water resources.
This action aims to improve the sanitation and purification system in the towns of Don Benito and Villanueva de la Serena, ensuring compliance with current regulations regarding urban spills, and minimizing spills by alleviating the sanitation network. The new EDAR will also increase energy efficiency and achieve efficient sludge treatment that will bring economic improvements to the municipal administration; as well as, control the overflows of runoff waters caused by the rains.
The works consist of the construction of a new EDAR, new emissaries and collectors that have a greater capacity than the current ones, as well as the construction of regulation structures formed by reliefs and storm tanks (and in one case regulation raft)
The work is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund ERDF 2014-2020, within the Multiregional Operational Programme of Spain (POPE), contributing to the conservation of the environment and cultural heritage.
